Artifacts, Roman and Anglo-Saxon, boxed the Anglo-Saxon items noted as found 'Near Horncastle', these include a 4th. century Roman crossbow brooch an Anglo-Saxon Cruciform brooch of 5/6th. century, two further Anglo-Saxon brooches of the 7/8th. century and an Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger c.700-c.800 A.D., which is illustrated in a booklet produced by Scunthorpe Museum in 1987, it is listed as No.4 on page 7 and states 'Girdle hanger, from Horncastle area. We are not sure what these objects were used for but it seems likely that they were or represented keys'. A copy of the booklet is sold with the 6 artifacts.

A bronze spanning hook for a crossbow with D-section triangular openwork panel and tang to the upper edge with rivet hole, ribbed collar below and hook flattened one side with finger detailing. 99 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Found Canterbury area, Kent, UK, 1980s. A similar example is in the Danish national collection in the Nationalmuseet, Copenhagen (image included with the item) from Soborg Castle, Denmark. [No Reserve] Fine condition; tip of tang absent above the attachment hole. Rare.

A silver brooch of P-shaped type with spring wound round the crossbar and knop above with beaded wire fillet; seven beaded wire fillets to the flat-section bow, returned foot with catchplate. 21 grams, 67mm (2 1/2"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. Cf. Hattatt, R. Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, item 1247. The progression from this late form of P-shaped brooch to the earliest crossbow brooches can be easily seen. The presence of the large spring to the headplate is the main visual difference. Very fine condition.

A fabricated crossbow brooch with facetted onion-shaped knops to the arms and a third above the bow; the arms facetted with tiered upper face, the bow D-shaped in section with collar to the lower edge, footplate with openwork scrolls to each edge; tubular catchplate to the reverse and hinged pin. 22 grams, 70mm (2 3/4"). A mixed group comprising: an 18th century Continental cut-steel fob seal with oval face depicting intaglio heraldic garnished arms of engrailled cross with crossbow bolt on bezant in angles, surmounted by a horsehead crest and scrolled mantle; a 19th century cut steel fob seal (suspension loop defective) with rectangular face bearing incuse 'LN' initials in script; a 19th century bronze fob seal with oval face bearing incuse ornate initials 'GH' in monogram. 38 grams total, 20-33mm long (seal faces 17-23mm) (3/4 - 1 1/4 (3/4 - 1)"). Property of a Warwickshire gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.

A GERMAN SPORTING BULLET CROSSBOW (SLURBOW), LATE 17TH CENTURY with small steel bow, walnut tiller swelling about the release mechanism and formed with cheek-piece and patch-box, the latter fitted with sliding cover (associated), inlaid with engraved horn plaques including a demon mask and a coat-of-arms on the underside, additionally inlaid with an earlier series of engraved plaques, including a horse and a unicorn flanking the mechanism, a female nude and two grotesques, and fitted with iron loop, long angular trigger-guard, iron nut, horn butt-plate, and iron barrel formed in two stages (the tiller with inactive worm damage and an early repair involving a brass plate reinforcing the trigger area).
