Lot 530

A modern crossbow together with two Armex UK bows CONDITION REPORTS Crossbow - the woodwork has dents and knocks / scratches conducive with use. There is some sign of rust to some of the metalwork particularly the trigger and top screw bolt and the sight. There appears to be a screw of some sort missing towards the front end of the bow and chips to the metal work. The plastic to the shoulder end is inscribed "MK" within a seal mark of bow and arrow and has some knocking and scratching. The trigger and release appear to work though not known if in full working order. Armex UK silver maple leaf decorated bow - not known if complete as it does appear some elements of the firing mechanism do not appear so. There are some signs of rusting to the nuts. See images for further detail. Armex UK blue bow - again not known if complete though it does appear some items may be missing. See imgaes for further detail.

An Arborian Tree Man crossbow and dagger from Mike Hodges' sci-fi adventure Flash Gordon. The Tree Men of Arboria wore daggers as part of their costumes, and wielded their crossbows as Flash (Sam J. Jones) escaped the temple after tricking Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton) during the Wood Beast ritual. The crossbow comprises a fibreglass body finished in green with gold-coloured detailing, black wooden bow arms and a foldable arm brace featuring a leather cuff. The resin dagger consists of a slightly curved blade, an intricately detailed green handle and a green leather sheath. Both pieces exhibit minor signs of damage and paint wear. Van Helsing was given his gas-powered automatic crossbow by its inventor, Friar Carl (David Wenham), and used it in his battle with the brides of Dracula (Richard Roxburgh), killing the vampire Marishka (Josie Maran) after dipping its arrows in holy water. Stunt versions were used during action sequences, to avoid damaging to the functioning hero weapon.Cast entirely in solid rubber, the bow is painted to resemble metal and brass, featuring an ornate grip with a ram's head embellishment, a static arrow cartridge beneath, and a gas canister at the back. The bow arms fold into the side of the main body, with rope, also cast from rubber, strung between them. The arms and bowstring have warped slightly with age, and some paint has chipped away. Some signs of possible gilding are still on the knobs and on the arch. Crossbow brooches, used for fastening cloaks were an international late Roman type, and were often worn by men in positions of authority, in the military or civil bureaucracy. A famous ivory diptych, now Monza, Italy, depicts Stilicho, the head of the Western Roman military under the Emperor Honorius in the years around 400 AD, along with his wife, Serena, and son, Eucherios. Both Stilicho and Eucherios wear crossbow brooches to fasten the cloaks on their right shoulders, indicating the importance of this type of dress accessory for those in positions of authority. This beautiful item may have belonged to a Roman military officer or another important official. Excellent condition. Size: L:80mm / W:55mm ; 70g; Provenance: From the private collection of a Central London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/European art market before 2000.

300-400 AD. Late Roman. An excellent bronze crossbow brooch, with three onion-like protrusions, an arched bow, rectangular tail and surviving pin. The bow bears an inscription reading “VETERE FELIX.” Crossbow brooches, used for fastening cloaks were an international late Roman type, and were often worn by men in positions of authority, in the military or civil bureaucracy, but also by women. A famous ivory diptych, now Monza, Italy, depicts Stilicho, the head of the Western Roman military under the Emperor Honorius in the years around 400 AD, along with his wife, Serena, and son, Eucherios. Both Stilicho and Eucherios wear crossbow brooches to fasten the cloaks on their right shoulders, indicating the importance of this type of dress accessory for those in positions of authority. This beautiful item may have belonged to a Roman military officer or another important official. The formula VETERE FELIX (‘Use happily’) may reflect a pagan blessing.
