AN ITALIAN INFANTRY BREASTPLATE FLUTED IN THE GERMAN FASHION, CIRCA 1520 of globose form, with a bold inward turn at the neck, stamped with a mark beneath, perhaps a crowned crossbow bolt, flanged outwards at the base to receive a skirt (missing), embossed with a central panel of flutes within a matching frame (two internally-patched repairs, pitting), pierced with a pair of later holes for the attachment of a lance-rest, and fitted at the arm-openings with a pair of gussets turned en suite with the neck 35.5cm; 14in highBreastplates with related decoration are preserved in the Museo Stibbert, Florence (cat.no.5), the collection of Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle and the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum, Zurich.
TWO GOAT`S FOOT LEVER`S FOR SPANNING CROSSBOWS, 17TH/18TH CENTURY AND A LARGE QUANTITY OF CROSSBOW BOLTS the first of steel (pitted), with shaped side-bars, a pair of lugs for attachment to the tiller, and a moulded handle at the top; the second comprising two bars of wood, the shorter with two recesses for the tiller lugs (chipped), and the longer with a moulded handle; the crossbow bolts comprising three moulded steel heads on wooden shafts, 16th century; three shafts of similar date, one with later head; four 19th Century bolts with turned steel heads; eighteen 19th century bolts with triangular steel heads; and eleven further bolts the first: 32cm; 12 1/2in when closed (41)

A GERMAN PISTOL CROSSBOW, CIRCA 1830 with slender steel bow retained by a central screw, fitted with string of twisted cord, probably the original, octagonal brass `pistol` barrel interrupted by a vacant oval towards the median, fitted with blued fore-and back-sights, engraved case-hardened tang covering the action and fitted with notched nut, double set trigger, walnut tiller cut with a panel of chequering over the fore-end and the butt, brass trigger-guard with neoclassical finial and engraved with a bouquet on the bow, and brass fore-end cap 40cm; 15 3/4in Provenance Robin Wigington
A GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW, LATE 16TH CENTURY with steel bow struck with the two marks (Neue Støckel 6451) retained by later cords, fitted with an adjustable steel collar joined by a steel stirrup on each side of the tiller and later string, hardwood tiller veneered with engraved staghorn plaques top and bottom, the latter decorated with two allegorical figures including fortune beneath the bow, a green man mask centring on an aperture for inserting loading rods, and profile masks on each side of the mechanism, the sides of the tiller finely inlaid with engraved staghorn plaquettes, including a running pattern of scrolling foliage, ball flowers and profile masks, the top of the tiller fitted with a later wooden bar for use as a slurbow, iron nut, iron trigger-guard and a pair of iron lugs for loading (the inlay with minor losses and wear, small chips, the butt-plate missing) 59cm; 23 1/4in tiller Literature Dr. J. Fastenau, Die Waffensammlung, 1910, no. 184. It would appear that this was modified for use as a slurbow in the early 19th century, probably when the string and cords were replaced.

A FRENCH TARGET CROSSBOW BY THIS, 43 BOULEVARD DU TEMPLE, PARIS, SECOND QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY AND TWO FURTHER CROSSBOWS, 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES the first with slender steel bow retained by two pierced moulded brass plaques, figured walnut tiller incorporating a rest beneath and with butt of gun-stock form, fitted with brass bolt channel, brass nut, and adjustable brass back and fore-sights, brass mounts comprising spurred trigger-guard and butt-plate, and fitted with a steel stirrup at the front; the second with later wooden bow, walnut tiller of gun stock form, inlaid around its border and on each side of the butt with later marquetry designs, carved bolt channel, small steel nut, and steel mounts including butt-plate of shaped outline; and the third with slender steel bow, hardwood tiller incorporating a scrolling rest beneath, and brass mounts the first: 75cm; 29 1/2in tiller (3) This is recorded making crossbows at 43 Boulevard du Temple circa 1820-40.
