Returning to London on joining the Metropolitan Police in 1931. Awarded the King?s Police Medal for bravery in 1936. Joined Special Branch in 1938. Serving undercover with organisations such as IRA and Oswald Mosley and the Blackshirts and various organisations and individuals thought to be a risk to national security during the war years. Protection Officer to Winston Churchill in 1945 and again in 1951-1952. Spending time at Chartwell and Chequers and travelling with him to Antibes, France. Protection Officer to Clement Attlee 1945-1951.
