The original entry describes it as 'cigarette or cigar case with tinder tube and match box'.Fully marked inside and further part marked on covers. Engraved inside one cover with retailer's name and further engraved 'Registered 21st March 1868'. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use as well as some bruising to the lower body with corresponding loss to the engine-turned decoration.

Within a black bordered box McCay has drawn an ink sketch (with feint pencil lines beneath) of the cigar smoking clown Flip, companion of Nemo, in a head and shoulders pose wearing his top hat.
