A Charles Vyse (1882-1971) stoneware 'Jun' bowl, streaked with lavender and purple glaze and raised on four ruyi feet, the base incised 'CHARLES VYSE CHESLEA', 15cm wide x 9.5cm high, 14.5cmCharles Vyse's neighbour, George Eumorfopoulos (1863-1939), was a famous collector of Chinese ceramics. This collection sparked Vyse's interest, and he started experimenting in the Song style. Provenance:The collection of Paul Whitfield (1942–2018).Paul Whitfield’s distinguished auctioneering career began in in the furniture department at Christie’s in 1965 rising quickly through the ranks to become managing director at King Street by 1969. Later, he was instrumental in the setting up of Christie’s South Kensington. He was the son of the poet and writer Christopher Whitfield, an early friend of Michael Cardew in the 1920s, and a supporter of Frederick Landseer Griggs.After Christie’s, he worked in roles at Bonhams, Sotheby’s, and finally Phillips. Passionate about his craft, he had a deep knowledge of many areas, including bronzes, furniture, ceramics, and modern British painting. This passion was reflected in his own collection, avidly compiled over his lifetime and housed at his Cotswold home outside Chipping Campden.In retirement, he provided invaluable support to the north Cotswolds’ museums, as a trustee of the Guild of Handicraft Trust and the Court Barn Museum, as well as loaning works of art to the Winchcombe archive collection.Appears in good condition with no sign of damage or restoration. Charles Vyse, 'La Folie Bergère', an earthenware figural group, circa 1927, raised on an ebonised block base, seemingly unmarked, overall height 34cm.Condition report:No restoration. There is an evident hairline to the shaped section of the base towards the back of the figure, which is ingrained with dirt. It appears to end as it meets the green-glazed foliage surrounding the group. Some of the flowers to the hair, base, and green leaves to Pan's wreath have small chip losses but are mostly intact. There is a firing line to the rear legs/ tail base of the lamb. Fine crazing is especially evident to the skin-tone glaze.
