Grand Admirals Baton Given to Grand Admiral Karl Donitz in the Post War Years to Replace the Original Example which was taken as War Booty and Now Sits in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry Regimental Museum, this superb quality replica is made in the same way as the original baton issued to Karl Donitz when he was appointed Grand Admiral of the German Kriegsmarine. The gilded metal sections are 800 silver marked. Blue velvet cloth centre with gilded Kriegsmarine down winged eagles, Iron Crosses and Anchors. To one end of the baton is the enamelled swastika and the other end the U-Boat war badge. Accompanying the baton is a typed letter signed by Donitz, dated 1973, gifting the item to Mathias von Werthern, the letter which is written in German translates as follows, “Due to the loss of my Grand Admiral Staff, I received from my closest comrades as a gift a post-war production of my staff as compensation, which gave me great pleasure. As a sign of my great gratitude for the great help in carrying out my projects. I leave this bar to Mr. Mathias von Werthern as a sign of my great esteem and as a souvenir.” We believe that Mr von Werthern assisted Karl Donitz in writing his biography. Also accompanying the items is a folder of research material and newspaper cuttings relating to the career of Grand Admiral Donitz. Grand Admiral Karl Donitz was born on 16th September 1891 in Brandenburg, near Berlin. In 1910 Karl Donitz enlisted in the Imperial German navy (Kaiserliche Marine). He soon rose to officer rank and when WW1 broke out he was serving on SMS Breslau. In 1916, Donitz transferred to the newly formed submarine service, the U-boats, first serving on U-39. Whilst in command of another submarine, he had to surface and scuttle his ship, leading him to being taken prisoner of war by the British. In the inter-war years, he continued to serve with the much smaller German naval force under the Reichsmarine of the Weimar Republic. With the Third Reich coming into power, the Reichsmarine was changed to the Kriegsmarine and Donitz was serving with the German submarine programme as a junior officer. It was at this time that his disregard for the head of the German navy, Grand Admiral Raeder. It was said that Raeder was not in favour of submarine warfare and as a result the production and launching of submarines was not pushed forward in the pre-WW2 years. On 28th January 1939, Donitz was promoted to Commodore and Commander of U-Boats for the German Kriegsmarine. In 1943 Donitz replaced Erich Raeder as Grand Admiral of the Kriegsmarine. As commander of the German Navy, Donitz issued many orders for the sinking of allied shipping from the Atlantic and also the convoys heading to Russia, known as the Arctic Convoys. In the last days of the Third Reich in 1945, he became a very important part of the high command. When Adolf Hitler took his own life in the Fuhrer Bunker, he named Karl Donitz as his successor. He fled with the new leaders of Germany to Flensburg, where he surrendered to the British troops. It was in Flensburg, his original baton was taken as war booty by men of the 4th Battalion Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, eventually becoming the property of Brigadier Jack Churcher, commander of 159th Brigade, it was he that donated the item to the Regimental museum of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. Due to the wartime issue example being held in a regimental museum, this is the only available opportunity to acquire a baton that was actually owned by Grand Admiral Donitz.
