Dame Laura Knight DBE, RA (1877-1970) - Little Dutch Girl, signed, watercolour, 35.5 x 18.5cm Painted in 1906 on the artist's second painting sojourn at Laren, Holland Provenance: Laura Knight's sister-in-law Agnes ("Tag") Knight by 1907; with Mary Lindsay (nee Eady), Lady Monteath (1905-1994) c1941; anon sale Bonhams, 11 November 2008 to R John Croft FCA, great nephew of Dame Laura Knight. Laura and Harold Knight first visited Laren in 1905 having been invited to join the British artist Henry Silkstone Hopwood (1860-1914) for a six weeks' painting trip. The Knights lodged at the "vrouw Kan". Laura and Harold Knight revisited Laren in Spring 1906, having purchased a six months' return ticket for £1 at Tower Wharf. Following the success of the Leicester Galleries' exhibition of that year, they returned to Laren in 1907; this time staying at one of the larger farms outside the village, but taking their meals at the widow Kan's boarding house. In her autobiography, Laura Knight describes a game the Americans staying at the artists' colony played: a version of baseball that became the couple's favourite exercise, the last game being played on Christmas day 1907. Laura and Harold Knight left Laren for the last time in January 1908. Good condition

Surely one of the most desirable Evolutions to ever come to market? An unrepeatable mileage of just 794 and Richard Burns ownership provenance. Fully recommissioned by marque experts at a cost of £16,500. Absolutely immaculate. Mitsubishi had enjoyed much success in rallying all around the world since 1973 with their Gallant, Lancer and Starion, however in 1992, the decision was made to fully commit to winning the World Rally Championship (WRC). Utilising the best of the technologies established through previous years, including their much-refined four-wheel drive S-AWC system (Super-All Wheel Control), the Lancer GSR Evolution model series was launched. True to its name, the series has undergone an ongoing evolution process ever since its introduction with improvements in engine performance and handling leading to the Evolution II in 1993 and the Evolution III in 1995.Following the introduction of the new Lancer road car model which debuted major improvements in styling and performance, the Lancer GSR Evolution IV was launched in 1996, boasting more power and ever more innovative technology including their new AYC (Active Yaw Control) adaptive handling enhancement system.The Evolution V continued the process with a further increase in engine torque and substantially improved handling thanks to a wider track and upgraded Brembo braking. Its 2-litre, DOHC, intercooler-turbocharged, four-cylinder engine now used an upgraded intercooler, enlarged nozzle area in the twin-scroll turbocharger, lighter pistons, an upgraded radiator and oil-cooler to produce 280bhp. Launched in January 1998 and produced for only a year, the Lancer Evolution V took up the motorsport mantle, at least in terms of the WRC. A new ruling allowing a bigger body gave Mitsubishi the opportunity to extend the previous model’s platform, increasing brake and wheel size, adding 10mm to its track and displaying, for the first time, flared arches and much more aggressive styling.It’s now widely accepted that finding credible examples of the Evolution V is becoming increasingly hard, so the car presented here represents a remarkable opportunity. This 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evolution V, S500 TMR, is a UK-market car finished in Pyrenean Black and was intriguingly either given or sold to Richard Burns by Mitsubishi Motors in late 1998. Richard Burns is quite rightly considered a motorsport legend, a driver of great talent, whose life was sadly cut short in his prime at the age of just 34. He was undoubtedly worth more than his sole WRC title, but he played his part in Mitsubishi winning the Constructors Title in 1998 alongside his co-diver, Robert Reid, and we understand that S500 TMR was a reward for his efforts. As history tells us, Richard then signed for Subaru in 1999 and naturally couldn’t be seen driving an Evolution, however this car clearly meant a lot to him as he resisted the temptation to sell it and added it to his personal Collection.Over the years, the Burns family and their associates put together the Richard Burns Collection and S500 TMR was a prominent part of this for many years. Our car-enthusiast vendor acquired the car from Jo Burns (Richard’s sister) in February 2020 with a recorded 789 miles on the clock – no, that's not a typo! He then sent it to marque specialists, Auto Torque Ltd. of Buckinghamshire, for a complete underbody recommission (as the car had suffered from being in storage for so long). This work was exceptional, carried out to OEM-spec at a cost of £16,500, and photos within the car’s history file detail the exacting lengths to which they went.This work was finished in May 2021 and the car has since been cossetted in a special facility as part of our vendor’s Collection, still with just 794 miles indicated.This is a very exciting opportunity to acquire a car with unique provenance that makes this particular example 'one of a kind'. Second World War – 2nd Lt. Arkless Lockey, Prisoner of War of Japan. An emotive sketchbook compiled after being taken prisoner at the Fall of Singapore and subsequently held in the Prisoner of War camps Changi in Singapore, Heito in Taiwan and Tokyo Branch 2 and Zentsuji in Japan, circa 1942-1945. 33 detailed sketches, some covering two pages, plus 11 separate loose pictures, including portraits of other prisoners, album 20.5cm x 15cm. This is a rare album which was produced at great personal risk, given that prisoners were forbidden from creating any documentation and subject to severe punishment if found. Sketches comprising: scenes at Heito (titled 'Haito') - including P.O.W.s loading stones, exterior and interiors of Hut. No. 1 Officer's quarters, general camp views, soldiers exercising, straw rope and shoe making. Tokyo Branch 2 - the exterior and interior of the camp, 'Rice Fatigue' (prisoners hauling a cart). Prisoner of War transport ship - Singapore to Taiwan - 'P.O.W. class'. Changi - Royal Engineer's kitchen. Zentsuji - Room No. 3, Library, Corner of Galley, Birds-eye view of the camp. Jnr., 1st Lt., Infantry, U.S.A.); 'Stan Gladys' (GLADYS, Stanley J., 1st Lt., U.S.A., QMC); 'John Fisher' (FISHER, John W., 1st Lt., U.S.A., Infantry); 'Jeff Caldicott' (CALDICOTT, G. At the time of his capture in the Fall of Singapore, he worked for the Deputy Assistant Director of Transportation. Based on the single sketch at Changi, he was likely held there briefly before he was transferred to Heito in August 1942, presumably as part of the large contingent of British and Allied P.O.W.s to arrive at Heito camp late that month. The main slave labour task in this camp was to pick rocks and stones from a vast area of an old dried river bottom near the camp to make the land ready to plant sugar cane. Camp Commandant, 1st Lieutenant Tamaki, was known for being sadistic and caring little for the welfare of the prisoners. He boasted of aiming to 'fill the cemetery', which he did (132 men died at Heito, the highest in-camp death rate for camps in Taiwan). 'Tokyo Branch 2' was a Dispatch Camp where the primary labour was shipyard construction. Based in Yokohama Baseball Stadium, it was renamed 'Tokyo Branch 3' on 1st August 1943. By that time, Lockey had likely transferred to Zentsuji camp in southern Japan, presumably until the end of hostilities. Despite being one of the few camps designed to hold prisoners (previously used in this capacity during the Russo-Japanese War in 1907 and the Sino-Japanese War in 1937) and used as a 'show' camp for propaganda purposes, conditions at Zentsjuji were still deplorable and overcrowded. Heckling and depriving prisoners of food or medicine was reportedly a regular occurrence at the camp, which also acted as the headquarters for several work camps in the area. Access to food ranged from fair during the early months of occupancy to starvation levels in July 1944. The rice served contained weevils and worms, and the rarely offered meat rations ranged from fresh to rotten. Unlike the enlisted men, officers received fewer rations but were not forced to work outside in the rain or snow. The camp was liberated on 12th September 1945, and Lockey was reported as no longer a prisoner of war by 26th September 1945. Arkless Lockey was born in 1901 in Durham.
