Parachute Training with the US Green Berets. He would see action, firstly in the Aden Crisis On a 16 man night patrol, (his enemy were the Arab Tribesman of the National Liberation Front), they came across a goatherd, after being called up to translate, this happened! (extract from No Mean Soldier by P McAleese..)'We assumed everything was going according to plan, and moved on carefully, the moon was not yet up and it was so dark in the narrow wadi I could only just see the rock walls rearing up beside us, five minutes later Dave Haley(Sgt) whispered 'Pete come up' there's some more chappies down here! I padded up to Dave, to speak to them and made out the dark shapes of a group of shepherds lying on the ground ahead, just as i started to speak, I saw one of them shift on his side, it was probably the way he moved which warned me and I thought this is never right, the Arab shot Dave Haley full in the chest, he should have shot me as I was the closest, but I was standing to one side......Dave collapsed badly wounded and I shot the Arab six times, then all hell broke loose. 'McAleese would later serve again in Aden and would become one of the first Parachute Reg't/SAS members to free-fall parachute into a 'hot zone' with Operation Snowgoose 'Radfan Emergency', McAleese served in Bahrain and Cyprus and served in Borneo with the SAS 16th Air troop (D Sqdn) being involved in the gruesome 'Jungle Warfare' of that conflict. It would be fair to say that when McAleese left the British Army in 1969 he had already seen plenty of action with the Regiment. He worked in the lucrative Industry of the North Sea Oil Rigs, but once a soldier, always a soldier and in 1975, this was all to change with a new career as a 'mercenary' fighting in the Angolan Civil War, fighting on behalf of the National Liberation Front of Angola, even assuming Command of the Formation after the Capture of 'Costas Georgiou'. In early 1977 he went to Rhodesia, where he enlisted with the Rhodesian Special Air Service Regiment, being assigned to A Sqdn, with the rank of a Non-Commissioned Officer, later in 1979 he joined the British South Africa S Police 'Special Branch' operating in South Rhodesia and after the fall of Rhodesia in 1980 he enlisted with the South Africa Defence Forces 44, Parachute Brigade, in which he served as Colour Sgt. In the early 80's he was instrumental in the creation of a new Pathfinder Reconnaissance unit, and served in the South Africa Border War, in the mid 1980's McAleese set up home in Pretoria and became employed with the COIN Security group, a Military/Police private contractor based in South Africa. He would go on to be severely injured in a near-fatal Parachute Display jump and would return to the UK. At the end of the 1980's he spent two years working for Government forces in the Columbian Drug Wars conflict, being involved in a covert Operation to locate and 'deal with' Pablo Escobar, he also went onto work in Moscow, Russia, as a Bodyguard Training Instructor and also undertook Security work in Algeria and later Iraq for several years, the recipient also ran a Public House in Birmingham, 'The Gunmakers Arms'. Peter McAleese was once quoted....'I'm just an ordinary person, who happened to find himself doing extraordinary things' and there is no doubt that this group represents a unique insight to the 'tough' world of being a professional soldier and its combination of awards is almost unique, the recipient not only served his country with 'distinction but led a very colouful military career throughout...the lot also consists of the following... Recipients Official issue Sand coloured SAS Beret, with cloth badge, South African Parachute Regiment Beret, Recipients official British Army Dog Tag, together with Rhodesian & South African Dogs Tags, Note: British Army Blood group was wrong), a large wooden SAS plaque obtained by the recipient at auction due to its provenance from a contact at 22 S.A.S. The brooch is of remarkable quality and technical accomplishment, both in its manufacture and in the working of the gems. This kind of fibula, well known as a 'crossbow brooch', was used by the Roman army from the last quarter of the third century until the sixth century AD. It was a signifier of military status, and simpler specimens in bronze are often found in the graves of soldiers from the 4th and 5th century AD. More precious specimens, in gold or gilt, such as this example, were reserved for officers. 38.33 grams, 80mm (3"). Property of a Spanish collector; acquired from an old Spanish collection, 2008; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato. The brooch is of remarkable quality and technical accomplishment, both in its manufacture and in the cutting of the gemstones into angular pyramidal forms. This kind of fibula, well know as a 'crossbow brooch', was in use within the Roman army from the last quarter of the third century until the sixth century AD. It was an attribute of military status and simpler specimens in bronze are often found in the graves of soldiers of the 4th and 5th century AD. More precious specimens, in gold or gilded, such as this example were reserved for officers. Very fine condition. Rare.

See Robinson, R., The Armour of Imperial Rome, New York, 1975; Garbsch, J., Römische Paraderustüngen, München, 1979; Born, H.,Junkelmann M., Römische Kampf-und Turnierrüstungen, Band VI, Sammlung Axel Guttmann, Mainz,1997; D'Amato R., A.Negin, Decorated Roman Armour, London, 2017; D'Amato R., A.Negin, Roman Heavy Cavalry (1), Cataphractarii and Clibanarii, 1st century BC-5th century AD, Oxford, 2018; this mask helmet belongs to the category of Roman Mask Helmets employed in the sportive games, acting also as military training, of the so called Hyppika Gymnasia described by Arrian of Nicomedia in his Taktika, written down during the age of the Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD), however, these kind of very simplified masks were often used in battle as well, especially by the heavy cavalry of the catafractarii (D'Amato-Negin, 2018, p.30,36,38-40), the distinguishing features of this type of masked helmet, diffused in the Roman Army since the Late Antonine Age (second half of second century AD) is the removable central area of the mask covering eyes, nose and mouth and the division of the helmet in two parts on the line of the ears; the Pfrondorf specimen (Garbsch,1979, pl.26; Born-Junkelmann,1997, p.50; D'Amato-Negin, 2017, fig.168 a-b), in Stuttgart Museum, which gives the name to the typology, is the most complete and known of such specimens; three parts helmets are known from Danubian sites, like Ostrov (Romania, Robinson, 1975, pls. 370-373; Garbsch, 1979, pl.27), from the German Limes (Oberflorshtadt, Robinson, 1975, fig.129, p.108, D'Amato-Negin, 2017, fig.172c, p.169) and a magnificent specimen, preserved only in the skull, from the collection Axel Guttmann is kept at the Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins (D'Amato-Negin, 2017, fig.172a, p.169); a further splendid specimen, the mask only preserved, is kept in a large private European collection (D'Amato-Negin, 2017, fig.180, p.177"). 2.1 kg total including stand, 27cm (10 1/2"). From an important East Anglian collection of arms and armour; formerly in a Dutch private collection since the 1990s; previously in a Swiss family collection since before 1980; accompanied by a metallurgic analytical report, written by metallurgist Dr. Brian Gilmour of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford, report number 144723/HM1364; and an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 144723-10011. This type of helmet is very rare in such fine condition. Helmets with a facial cut-out have often the female characteristic of Medusa, considering the psychological impact that this creature, with the power to transform men to stone. The apotropaic character of such divinity, inspiring terror on the enemies and confidence to the wearer, was part of the interpenetration of the divine world inside the human world, considered essential for the men who risked their life daily, who needed to feel the protection of the divine beings on the battlefield, or in the travel to the underworld. The main problem of these helmets with face attachment and three-part cutout for eyes, nose and mouth, is the question of the presence of the inner mask. Separate inner masks in bronze are known, some of them silvered (Robinson, 1975, pl.374, p.127, from Stadtpark Mainz), or with slender brows and finely pierced rings in the eye-opening (Robinson, 1975, pl.37,5 p.127, from Weisenberg"). There is no way of ascertaining whether or not our specimen was equipped with an inner mask, though it would appear to be quite possible that it was not, as there are no traces of holes in the point where, in the mask helmets of this typology, the turning pin for the attachment of the mask is usually visible. This suggest that our mask was conceived and used for a more practical use on the battlefield, without excluding its possible employment for the tournaments and the Hyppika Gymnasia. Very fine condition, some restoration. Extremely rare in this condition.

Great illustration showing the marching band of the Grenadier Guards wearing their iconic red coats and bearskin hats marching and playing music in formation towards the viewer with the text below. Excellent condition, two pin holes at the top. The Grenadier Guards (GREN GDS) is an infantry regiment of the British Army. It can trace its lineage back to 1656 when Lord Wentworth's Regiment was raised in Bruges to protect the exiled Charles II. In 1665, this regiment was combined with John Russell's Regiment of Guards to form the current regiment, known as the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. Since then, the regiment has filled both a ceremonial and protective role as well as an operational one. In 1900, the regiment provided a cadre of personnel to form the Irish Guards; while later, in 1915 it also provided the basis of the Welsh Guards upon their formation. The regiment's early history saw it take part in numerous conflicts including the War of Spanish Succession, the War of Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War, and the Napoleonic Wars; at the end of this period the regiment was granted the "Grenadier" designation by a Royal Proclamation. During the Victorian Era, the regiment took part in the Crimean War, the Anglo-Egyptian War, the Mahdist War, and the Second Boer War. During the First World War, the Grenadier Guards was expanded from three battalions to five, of which four served on the Western Front, while later during the Second World War, six battalions were raised, and several were converted to an armoured role as part of the Guards Armoured Division. These units fought in France, North-West Europe, North Africa and Italy. After the Second World War the regiment was reduced first to three battalions, then to two, and finally to one battalion in the mid-1990s. Major deployments during this time have included operations in Palestine, Malaya, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq.Year of printing: 1950s, country of printing: UK, designer: Charles Wood, dimensions (cm): 38x25.5.
