JAMES BOND ‘THE SPY WHO LOVED ME’, 1977 – TWO EARLY DIRECTOR’S SCRIPTS BY RICHARD MAIBAUM (2)Twoseparate mimeographed typescripts of Richard Maibaum’s screenplay, bothdifferent versions; one entitled The Spy Who Loved Me, Draft Screenplay,Richard Maibaum and dated Nov.5,1975, 154 pp. in grey card covers, contained in a red imitation leather binder; the other entitled The SpyWho Loved Me, Richard Maibaum, undated, the title page inscribed inblack ink in an unidentified hand Mr Lewis Gilbert and annotated with asmall arrowhead symbol, 129 pp. in buff card covers, contained in a blackimitation leather binder;  Both screenplays share a number of key plot elements woven around a threat to the West from a mysterious evil force with the ability to use satellite technology to detect and capture submerged nuclear submarines; and involving interference with the world’s oil supplies using nuclear submarines, adapted super tankers and oil platforms; in both, a new look SPECTRE, run by a group of young idealists all under the age of 30, are headed by a character called [Elroy] Kronk, who kills ‘Number One’ the old wheelchair-bound SPECTRE leader; then, backed by Jaws and six other International terrorists they overthrow the SPECTRE old guard. Kronk takes control for his own fiendish ends; both scripts feature a dramatic fight finale between Jaws and 007 in which 007 triumphs aided by electro-magnetic assistance; significant characters both scripts share include: steel-teethed-assassin Jaws, beautiful Russian agent Anya Amasova, General Gogol her KGB boss, new SPECTRE ‘Number One’   Kronk; and Gita, a tall beautiful assassin with a lethal butterfly pin brooch;   shared locations include: Sardinia, Geneva and Egypt; Key differences between the two scripts include: the location of the first appearance of Jaws, in the script dated 1975 [red binder] this occurs in Egypt in the ‘City of the Dead’, and in the undated script [black binder] in Prague where a lot of this script’s early action takes place; apart from a number of location and character variations, the most notable difference between the two scripts is that only the undated script [black binder] features the ‘Underwater Car Sub’ over a 20 page action sequence [pp.68-88]. In this script the car is a new model Ford modified by Q and delivered by him to Bond in Oslo.Richard Maibaum was the penultimate writer in the order of twelve different scriptwriters Cubby Broccoli employed to tackle the screenplay for The Spy Who Loved Me until he got the script he wanted. Maibaum worked on all but three of the Bond Films from Dr No (1962) to Licence to Kill (1989), and is the co-author with Christopher Wood of the final draft screenplay for The Spy Who Loved Me. The two scripts in this lot, both early variants of the final script, are a particularly interesting record of the development of this screenplay. It is fascinating to note which elements, included here, were omitted or adapted for use in the final version: -Firstly, the overthrow of SPECTRE’S `Number One’: In both scripts Number One is described as a heavy imposing man seated in a mechanised wheelchair which, in the dated script [red binder], has a mini communication system in its arm. In the undated script [black binder], Number One has a white cat on his lap. The new arch-villain Kronk manipulates Number One’s chair so that it and its occupant (without the cat) plunges to his death out of the window of the high-rise building. It is then that Kronk introduces his young radical supporters, described in the undated script as his ‘family’, and named in both as: Jaws, Gita (tall and beautiful), Marco, Rolz (American), Kazi (Japanese), Turner (a black) and Djabi (Arab terrorist type). Interestingly, in the undated script [black binder] Kronk is a woman disguised as a bald-headed, bespectacled man.  Kronk’s coterie of young idealists are said to have represented members of the Red Brigade, the Baader-Meinhof Gang, the Black September Organization and the Japanese Red Army. Their aim was to form a new SPECTRE no longer interested in blackmail and extortion, but intent on destroying civilization by capturing a nuclear submarine and wiping out the world’s oil fields.  This plot line of Maibaum’s with the young SPECTRE radicals was regarded by Cubby Broccoli as being too politically controversial at the time, and was consequently dropped from the final storyline;- Another significant difference between the two scripts is the appearance of the ‘ Underwater Car Sub’ in one and not the other. Q himself is reportedly killed off in the dated script [red binder] going down with a nuclear sub, an incident recounted to 007 by Moneypenny when, due to Q’s absence, she’s sent to delivers Bond’s reconnaissance kit to him at Oslo airport. In the undated script [black binder], Q himself meets 007 off the Oslo night train and delivers a new model Ford sports car with numerous vital modifications. The cars underwater features are not specified in the dialogue between the two, and become obvious when pursued by SPECTRE hoodlums on a death-defying cliffside rode, Bond with Anya beside him drives off the end of a jetty into the sea; it is during this ‘Underwater Car Sub’ sequence in the undated script that the two agent lovers believe they are going to die as they are trapped deep beneath the sea in the malfunctioning sub with only three hours of oxygen left. Bond removes two miniature bottles of Armagnac ‘27 from inside the car door and they toast each other: “To the spy who loved me”, Anya’s toast to Bond in English, Bond’s to her in perfect Russian. [pp.87-88]. In the dated script, the two agents make the same toast with the same vintage Armagnac following the dramatic action finale at the villain’s oil refinery [p.107]. In both instances they are of course miraculously saved. ConditionReport: Red binder script: Overall very good. Grey card cover has small tear to front edge, and some folding at edges of corners on both front and backBlack binder script: Overall very goodFootnote: The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), the tenth in the Eon Productions official 007series, initiated a number of records for the James Bond franchise. It wasCubby Broccoli’s first solo 007 venture without co-producer Harry Saltzman, andhe was determined that it should become the biggest and best Bond yet.  From the outset, the film’s path to successwas beset with numerous difficulties and the screenplay itself went throughmore adaptations and revisions than any production during the 40-year historyof 007 on screen. Problems began with Ian Fleming’s source material for thefilm’s title. Like the movie, it was Fleming’s tenth Bond novel in order, however it represented a departure from Fleming’s usual 007 format in that itis told from the viewpoint of a young Englishwoman who only meets the famousspy in the last few chapters of the book. For this reason, Fleming never wantedthis book to be sold as a film project. His estate, however, gave Broccolipermission to use the novel’s title only. The book and film do also share onesignificant common element – Jaws,  whois loosely based on Fleming’s villain, `Horror’, who had steel-capped teeth.Nevertheless, the screenplay for The Spy Who Loved Me is considered tobe the first Bond film whose story is completely original. After a visit toRussia, Broccoli devised a plot for a new story which suited the film’s title and focused on a beautifulRussian agent who falls in love with James Bond.  It is said that twelve different screenwriters worked on fifteen separate drafts for the screenplay over a period of three years, in one of the most fiendishly complicated film pre-production processes in Eon’s history. Considering the quantity of different variants of the screenplay here in Lewis Gilbert’s personal film...

PHILIP II OF SPAINLetter signed ('El Rey') as King of England ('Rey de Ingleterra') to Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alva in his capacity as Governor of Milan, in Spanish, concerning the disposition of lands in Milan, countersigned by his secretary ('G[onsalvus] Perezius'), complete papered seal with the combined arms of England, France and the Hapsburgs, integral address panel to verso, one page, creased at folds, some staining and fraying to left hand edge, small pin holes and tears at joints, 4to (283 x 215mm.), Hampton Court, 23 August 1555Footnotes:'REY DE INGLETERRA': PHILIP II OF SPAIN CONDUCTS BUSINESS AS KING OF ENGLAND.Philip of Spain, consort of Mary I between 1554-1558, spent only seventeen months of their marriage in England and therefore letters written from London are uncommon. The document is headed with Philip's titles 'King of England and Naples and Prince of Spain, Duke of Milan' and, although he styles himself here as King of England he was never crowned – his signature 'El Rey' is the usual Spanish form with an elaborate calligraphic flourish which possibly incorporates an elaborate initial 'P'. In the summer of 1555 Philip and Mary had retired to the purer air of Hampton Court to await the birth of a child, which, by the date of our letter, had been revealed as a phantom pregnancy. In September he left England (where he was deeply unpopular) for his European campaigns, only returning for a few months in March 1557 in order to persuade Mary to commit English troops to his war against France – a campaign which resulted in the loss of Calais. He writes here to his close advisor the Duke of Alba, Governor of Milan and Commander-in-Chief of the army in Italy from 1555-1559. Considered by many as the most effective general of his generation and immensely powerful, he had attended Philip's marriage to Mary Tudor in 1554 and held the post of governor of the Duchy of Milan for just one year from 1555-1556. He was to become notorious for his cruelty against Dutch Protestant rebels in the Spanish Netherlands. The text of our document appears to be in the hand of Gonzalo Pérez (c.1506-1566), the countersignatory. Pérez was Philip II's secretary and chief minister who had also served under Emperor Charles V and accompanied him to England on his marriage. ELIZABETH IWarrant signed ('Elizabeth R') at head and headed 'By the Queene', to Valentyne Browne, Treasurer of Berwick, appointing William Drury to succeed Sir Thomas Dacre as Marshall of '...our Towne and garrison of Barwick...', and ordering the payment of one hundred pounds, requesting '...we be not dubble charged with the payment of ye wages of Sir Thomas Dacre and his Retynew above eight days or tenne at the most...', with three manuscript insertions in another neat italic scribal hand, integral address panel on verso ('To our Trusty and Wellbelovid Valentyne Browne esquire Treasorer of our Towne of Berwick or to any of his deputies'), with dockets, one page on a bifolium, dust staining and small pin holes at folds, oblong folio (210 x 260mm.) Windsor Castle, 21 February 1564Footnotes:'FOR SEEING IT UPON THE ARRIVAL OF HIM THITHER, WE BE NOT DUBBLE CHARGED': Queen Elizabeth replaces a catholic with a protestant in a key strategic post and keeps a tight rein on the finances.Berwick was the so-called 'listening post' for Scottish affairs, ideally placed for keeping the Queen and her council informed about developments across the border. Here she replaces the catholic Thomas Dacre (d.1565), who had served Queen Mary, with the staunch protestant and loyal servant to Henry VIII and Edward VI, Sir William Drury (1527-1579). Dacre had held the post since 1561 but '...His sojourn there was unhappy and he complained bitterly of arrears of payment. Described as 'old and weak' in June 1563... he was probably glad to be replaced on 26 February 1564...' (Henry Summerson, ODNB). Drury remained at Berwick until 1576 during which time he found himself in the thick of tensions in the borders – responsible for the region's security, he acted as special ambassador during the quelling of the northern uprising in 1569-70, escaped two assassination attempts, took part in punitive border raids, and headed the army that brought the siege of Edinburgh to a close (see Sean Kelsey, ODNB). His reports to Cecil on Scottish affairs are among the most important state documents of the period. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Second War 1945 North West Europe ‘Paarlo’ M.C. group of eleven awarded to Captain Robert Maxwell, Queen’s Royal Regiment, who fought across Europe from the Normandy Landings to the capture of Berlin. Later rising to prominence as a flamboyant and controversial media magnate, Member of Parliament, fraudster and suspected spy - his mysterious drowning off the Canary Islands in 1991, ruled accidental by a subsequent inquest, left behind financial scandal and a fallen business empire and continues to excite speculation and conspiracy theories Military Cross, G.VI.R., reverse officially dated 1945, in Royal Mint case of issue; 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Poland, Republic, Cross of Valour 1944, bronze, unnumbered; Czechoslovakia, Republic, Military Medal for Merit; War Commemorative Medal 1939-45; Bulgaria, People’s Republic, Order of Stara Planina, First Class neck badge, 68mm, silver, gilt and enamel, in (damaged) case of issue; Finland, Republic, Order of the White Rose, Second Class set of insignia, by Tillander, Helsinki, comprising neck badge, 51mm, silver-gilt and enamel, and breast star, 78mm, silver, with gilt and enamelled centre and gilt retaining pin; Poland, People’s Republic, Order of Merit of the People’s Republic, Second Class set of insignia, comprising neck badge, 60mm, silver-gilt and enamels, and breast star, 81mm, silver and gilt, with silver and red enamelled centre; together with the related miniature awards, these also including Swedish Order of the Polar Star, the four campaign medals all official later issues, generally extremely fine (lot) £6,000-£8,000 --- Provenance: Sotheby’s, January 1993, when sold by direction of the Joint Court-appointed Receiver to the Estate of the late Robert Maxwell, M.C. M.C. London Gazette 12 April 1945: ‘For gallant and distinguished service in North West Europe’ The original recommendation states: ‘During the attack on Paarlo on 29 January 1945, Lieutenant Maxwell was leading his Platoon when a heavy artillery concentration fell on and near the Platoon killing and wounding several men. The attack was in danger of losing momentum but this Officer, showing powers of leadership of the highest order, controlled his men with great skill and kept up the advance. During the night another Platoon of the Company was counter attacked and partially overrun. An attempt to restore the position with another Platoon failed but Lieutenant Maxwell repeatedly asked to be allowed to lead another attempt; this request was eventually granted. This Officer then led two of his Sections across bullet swept ground with great dash and determination and succeeded in contacting the Platoon who had been holding out in some buildings. Showing no regard for his own safety he led his section in the difficult job of clearing the enemy out of the buildings, inflicting many casualties and causing the remainder to withdraw. By his magnificent example and offensive spirit this officer was responsible for the relief of the platoon and the restoration of the situation.’ Robert Maxwell was born Ján Ludvîk Hyman Binyamin Hoch in 1923 in the small town of Slatinské Doly in Carpathian Ruthenia, Czechoslvakia (later Hungary and now Solotvyno, Ukraine). He was one of seven children born into a poor Yiddish speaking Orthodox Jewish family, many members of which died in Auschwitz after the occupation of Hungary by the Nazis in 1944. Having left home for France in 1939, aged 16, Maxwell joined the Czechoslovak Army in exile in Marseilles in May 1940 but after the fall of France and evacuation of the British Army, he transferred in Britain to the Pioneer Corps and subsequently in 1943 to the North Staffordshire Regiment. He served throughout the campaign across Europe from the Normandy Landings to the fall of Berlin, was commissioned into the Queen’s Royal Regiment in January 1945 and the same month won the Military Cross at Paarlo, Netherlands: 'During the night 29th/30th [January 1945] about fifty enemy crossed the river in assault boats and, preceded by heavy shelling and mortaring, made an unexpected counter-attack on “A” Company in Paarlo. The Germans got into the houses held by 8 Platoon (Lieutenant M. L. Baker) and there was fierce fighting in the dark. In one house Lance-Corporal Dennis most gallantly held them at bay with his Sten gun until 7 Platoon, splendidly led by Second-Lieutenant R. Maxwell, counter-attacked with tank support and cleared the enemy from the village. Our artillery then took a heavy toll as the Germans withdrew across the river. Ten prisoners were taken and there were numbers of other casualties, including the enemy company commander. Our losses were seven killed and wounded...’ (History of the Queen's Royal Regiment. Vol VIII 1924-1948, compiled by Major R. C. G. Foster, M.C. refers). Maxwell received his award from Field Marshall Montgomery. He achieved the rank of Captain by the end of the war and afterwards for two years was a press censor for the foreign office in Berlin, becoming a British citizen in in 1946 and changing his name to Robert Maxwell in 1948. Using contacts gained during the Allied occupation, Maxwell made a start in business by becoming the British and United States distributor for Springer Verlag, a publisher of scientific books. In 1951 he bought a controlling stake in Butterworth Springer, renamed it Pergammon Press and rapidly built it into a major publishing house. By the 1960s, Maxwell’s business success had made him hugely wealthy and in 1964, representing the Labour Party, he was elected Member of Parliament for Buckingham, holding the seat until 1970. In 1984, he acquired Mirror Group Newspapers, giving him control of six British Newspapers, including the pro-Labour Daily Mirror, and precipitating a media war between himself and Rupert Murdoch, the proprietor of the News of the World and The Sun. Maxwell rescued the third division football club Oxford United from bankruptcy in 1982. As chairman, he helped to lead them to the top flight of English football in 1985 and the club won the League Cup the following year. By 1991 Maxwell’s business empire was heavily in debt and struggling to remain solvent. On 5 November 1991, he was found to be missing from his yacht, Lady Ghislaine (named after his youngest daughter) which was cruising off the Canary Islands. His naked body was later recovered from the Atlantic Ocean. The official ruling at an inquest held in December 1991 was death by a heart attack combined with accidental drowning although three pathologists at the inquest had been unable to agree on the cause of death. Maxwell was afforded a lavish funeral on the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem. The ceremony, which had all the trappings of a state occasion, was attended by many dignitaries and politicians and no fewer than six serving and former heads of Israeli intelligence listened while Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir eulogised him stating ‘he has done more for Israel than can today be told’ (Gideon’s Spies: The Secret History of the Mossad by Gordon Thomas refers). Robert Maxwell’s death triggered the complete collapse of his publishing empire. As lenders rushed to call in their debts, it emerged that Maxwell had used hundreds of millions of pounds from his companies’ pension funds in an unauthorised attempt to save his businesses from bankruptcy. In 2003, Foreign Office papers were released which revealed that British intelligence officers had suspected Maxwell of being a Soviet agent with one report describing him as ‘a thoroughly bad character and almost certainly financed by Russia’. ...
