He served with the 8th (Pioneer) Battalion during the Great War in France and Salonika, and was discharged on transfer to the Army Reserve on 30 May 1919. His conduct and Character have always been excellent.’ Sold together with the recipient’s two original fibre identification-tags, several original photographic postcards of the recipient in uniform, two of which identify him and his brother, and a larger group photograph with civilians taken in 1919, presumed to have been taken in Salonika; the recipient’s original Protection Certificate (Army Form E.11), his Certificate of Employment During the War (Army Form Z.18), together with his brothers Certificate on Transfer to Reserve (Army Form Z.21), Soldiers Demobilisation Account (Army Form W.5065), and Certificate of Employment During the War, (Army Form Z.18) and a white metal Light Infantry cap badge, converted to a pin badge.

Lot 582

A German Second War Luftwaffe Battle of Britain Pilot’s Grouping. A very nice small grouping of paperwork and award to Feldwebel Karl Heinz Wilhelm, who served with Jagdgeschwader 77 (Ace of Hearts Fighter Wing) during the Battle of Britain, and was shot down and captured at Waldron, Sussex, on 20 October 1940. The documents comprise his A4 size once folded award certificate for his Pilots Badge dated 1 April 1940, A4 size once folded promotion document from Feldwebel to Unteroffizier whilst a member of JG77 dated 31 May 1940 just prior to the Battle of Britain, a letter dated 15 November 1940 from a Luftwaffe officer to his family presumably confirming capture and perhaps more information on the action. A very interesting postcard size photograph of a group of German Kriegsmarine, Army and Luftwaffe prisoners of war, Wilhelm at the extreme right of the photograph still wearing his flight blouse with full insignia and still wearing the Luftwaffe Pilots Badge, which is offered here. The postcard is stamped Examined by Censor Prisoner of War Mail sent to his parents in Oldenburg, Germany, unfortunately at one stage of its life this card has been adhered to a collectors display and traces of gummed paper are on the back of the card. A small quantity of six photographs being of Luftwaffe interest showing a high ranking Luftwaffe officer exiting a JU52 and shaking hands with Luftwaffe personel, plus three pre war photographs, which we believe are images of the unit within the Condor Legion in Spain. Standard enlisted ranks breast eagle still sewn to a section of uniform cloth. The very fine condition C.E.Juncker produced Pilots Badge seen being worn in the photograph, excellent detail to the oak and laurel leaf wreath, all of the patinated finish remaining to the eagle, complete with its original hook, hinge and thick needle pin, which is at present located in a post war Pilot Observers Badge box. A pair of Luftwaffe Unteroffiziers shoulder boards, which again we presume are the ones being worn in the photograph. On close inspection of the prisoner of war photograph it can clearly be seen that his shoulder boards are of the stitch-in variety, which these are with their correct matching rank configuration of lace and pip. A post war plaque for the Association of Fighter Pilots from Jagerkreis Nord with his named label to the reverse side dated 1990. Three photographs of the crash site of his BF109 in Sussex, plus extra research material. Lastly a 175 page book plotting the history from WWII to date of the fighter group in North Germany at Flying Station Oldenburg, good condition (lot) £800-£1,200

Lot 530

Scarce WW2 German Army / Waffen-SS Infantry Assault Badge in Silver by Franke & Co Ludenscheid, mid war example complete with its original hinge, pin and catch fixing. Makers mark to the top hand corner of the reverse. Not a common maker mark to find.

Lot 531

WW2 German Army / Waffen-SS Panzer Assault Badge in Bronze by Karl Wurster, scarce solid backed bronze tomback example with the makers “W” mark to the top of the reverse. Badge is the die type 2. Complete with the original pin and catch fixing to the reverse. Good untouched example. See pages 76-78 of “The German Panzer Assault Badge of World War II” by Philippe De Bock for details of this maker.

Lot 532

Scarce WW2 German Army / Waffen-SS Panzer Assault Badge in Bronze by Hymmen & Co, fine example of a semi scooped out assault badge in bronze, characteristic for the maker pin and catch fixing to the reverse of the badge. Reverse marked “L/53” for the maker of Hymmen & Co, the makers mark is towards the top of the reverse, known as the “High Maker Mark” type. Some areas of oxidisation but generally still much of the bronze finish remains to the award. See page284 & 285 of “The German Panzer Assault Badge of World War II” by Philippe De Bock for details of this maker.

Lot 534

WW2 German Army / Waffen-SS Panzer Assault Badge for 50 Engagements by Joseph Felix & Sohne (JFS), an interesting example of a bronze grade maker marked 50 engagements tank assault badge. The award has the correct crimped fittings to the reverse of the award. Some of the dark bronzed finish remains to the centre panzer tank. Complete with the original fixing rivets to the reverse. The pin catch and hook both show stress marks under magnification and are magnetic which is both correct for this maker. The blackened number box has the thin numbers which again is correct for 50 engagement awards. Badge has JFS makers mark to the reverse of the wreath. Overall this is a good condition award. See Volume II of “The German Panzer Assault Badge of World War II” by Philippe De Bock.

Lot 535

Very Rare German Army / Waffen-SS Panzer Assault Badge for 75 Engagements by Joseph Felix & Sohne (JFS), fine example of the rare bronze grade version of the 75 engagements Panzer Assault award badge by the firm Joseph Felix & Sohne (J.F.S), the award has just the remains of the typical late war light bronze wash finish which can only be seen in the highlights of the wreath. The panzer tank has the flaws which are associated with original badges by this maker. Reverse of the award has the crimped hardware catch and pin fittings. The catch and the hook both show stress marks. The rear hardware is magnetic. Rivets to the reverse of the wreath, securing the tank to the wreath, under glass you can see small indentation. Overall this is in our opinion a very good example of a very scarce combat badge. Compares to examples shown in Volume II of “The German Panzer Assault Badge of World War II” by Philippe De Bock.

Lot 83

A German Third Reich Army Paratrooper's Badge, the eagle with traces of silvering, the reverse with gilt vertical round needle pin and C clasp, the back of the wreath later scratched II/1 8Kp E.M. The two bosses which secure the eagle to the wreath are rounded and have a verdigris finish, as does the barrel hinge of the clasp.

Außerdem sein GAR Badge 31st National Encampment Buffalo NY August 1897, Bronze getönt, an Band und Agraffe, rs. Bezeichnung "Penfold Buffalo N.Y. John Karr wurde hierfür die Congressional Medal of Honor "In testimony of his faithful and exemplary conduct as one of the escort to the remains of President Lincoln to Springfield, Ill." verliehen. Die Verleihung wurde später jedoch vom Kongress zurückgenommen, da sie nicht aus Tapferkeit und Furchtlosigkeit in Lebensgefahr im Kampf gegen einen Feind erworben wurde.Zustand: II +Sgt. John Karr – a Congressional Medal of Honor as a member of the escort for the remains of President Abraham Lincoln, April 1865 The five-rayed star (Army, first model) embossed in bronze, standing upright on one tip, bearing the engraver's signature "Paquet F.". The eagle riband buckle fastened with rings and the suspension bar with safety pin, both also embossed in bronze. On the original ribbon. The dedication "The Congress to Sergt. John Karr Co. Also, his GAR Badge 31st National Encampment Buffalo NY August 1897, tinted bronze, on the ribbon and riband buckle, the back inscribed "Penfold Buffalo N.Y. Pat'd June 1897".Introduced as the highest decoration for bravery by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, during the American Civil War, the Medal of Honor has been awarded approximately 3,500 times to date. Just a few days before the surrender of the Confederate troops under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston to General Sherman, the newly re-elected President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. on 14 April 1865. He died of his injuries the next day. Lincoln's remains were transported for burial from Washington D.C. to Springfield, Illinois, by train, accompanied by an honor guard, which also watched over the coffin at the mourning processions that took place in all large cities, such as New York and Chicago. Like Sgt. John Karr, every member of the guard was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for this service, "In testimony of his faithful and exemplary conduct as one of the escort to the remains of President Lincoln to Springfield, Ill". However, Congress later revoked the award as it had not been won by virtue of demonstrating bravery and fearlessness in mortal danger in battle against the enemy.Condition: II +

WW2 British Insignia and Document Grouping of 5498696 Warrant Officer J M White Army Air Corps / 2nd Special Air Service (S.A.S), interesting grouping of items attributed to Warrant Officer White who served with the Army Air Corps, Parachute Regiment and the Special Air Service during WW2, being mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct in North West Europe, London Gazette 10th May 1945. The grouping consists of Warrant Officer White’s original wartime SAS parachute wing which is an embroidered example with a brass pin back fixing to the reverse. The wing has fine embroidery to the parachute canopy and feathers in the wing. This design is typical of early wartime wings. This wing has been attached to a bullion embroidered SAS blazer badge and a small chrome and enamel pin back regimental badge is also attached. The insignia comes with his named Liberation of Norway 8th May 1945 citation which is named to him, “5498696 P Pte J M White A.A.C” and the publication “THE ALLIES IN NORWAY”. An interesting grouping, worthy of further research. In March 1944, the 1st and 2nd SAS Regiments returned from overseas to the United Kingdom and joined a newly formed SAS Brigade of the Army Air Corps. The unit took part in the invasion of mainland Europe, D-Day, Normandy in June 1944 and in May 1945 the 1st and 2nd SAS were sent to Norway to disarm the 300,000-strong German garrison. Members of the 2nd SAS were allowed to wear the insignia of the Special Air Service but the uniform and beret of the Army Air Corps / Parachute regiment, including Pegasus formation signs and maroon berets.
