Original vintage travel advertising poster: Royal Mail - Atlantis - Sunshine Cruises - Spring 1936. The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company was a British shipping company founded in London in 1839 by a Scot, James MacQueen. The line's motto was Per Mare Ubique (everywhere by sea). After good and bad times it became the largest shipping group in the world in 1927 when it took over the White Star Line. The company was liquidated and its assets taken over by the newly formed Royal Mail Lines in 1932 after financial trouble and scandal; over the years RML declined to no more than the name of a service run by former rival Hamburg Süd. Atlantis was built by Harland & Wolff and launched in 1913 as Andes for the Royal Mail Line. She operated on the route between Southampton and the River Plate in South America. After WWI she resumed service on the South American route but in 1930 she was converted and given her new name, ATLANTIS and her hull was painted white. Atlantis was built about the time of the Titanic and shares many of the same features, the foremast with crow’s nest, the sleek yacht like design and a tall funnel. Interiors were luxurious for her cruising days in the thirties. Atlantis survived two world wars and after WWII she was chartered for four years by the New Zealand Government to carry emigrants from the UK to New Zealand.Good condition, small tear on top, stain on the image, folded. Original vintage travel poster: La Provence Romaine PLM. The Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (usually known simply as the PLM) was a French railway company. Created between 1858 and 1862 from the amalgamation of the earlier Paris-Lyon and Lyon-Méditerranée companies, and subsequently incorporating a number of smaller railways, the PLM operated chiefly in the south-east of France, with a main line which connected Paris to the Côte d'Azur by way of Dijon, Lyon, and Marseille. The company was also the operator of railways in Algeria. PLM commissioned poster artist Roger Broders, sponsoring his travel to the Côte d'Azur and the French Alps so he could visit the subjects of his work. Lithographs of travel posters Broders rendered for PLM are still available commercially. Several of their draughtsman went on to notable careers, including Alfred Grévin. Absorbed in 1938 into the majority state-owned Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the PLM's network became the south-eastern region of SNCF.Good condition, small tears on margins, unnoticeable tear on the image. Original vintage travel advertising poster Montserrat Barcelona - Espana (Spain). Montserrat is a multi-peaked rocky range located near the city of Barcelona, in Catalonia. It is part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. The main peaks are Sant Jeroni (1,236 m), Montgrós (1,120 m) and Miranda de les Agulles (903 m). It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth. "Montserrat" literally means "saw (serrated, like the common handsaw) mountain" in Catalan. It describes its peculiar aspect with multitude of rock formations which are visible from a great distance. The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock. Montserrat is Spain's first National Park. The SS United States is a retired luxury passenger liner built in 1950–51 for United States Lines at a cost of $79.4 million ($733 million in 2016). The ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952. She was designed by American naval architect William Francis Gibbs and could be turned into a troopship if required by the Navy in times of war. The United States operated an uninterrupted schedule of transatlantic passenger service until 1969 and was never used as a troopship. Original vintage travel advertising poster: The American Airlines System. American Airlines was started in 1930 via a union of more than eighty small airlines. The two organizations from which American Airlines was originated were Robertson Aircraft Corporation and Colonial Air Transport. The former was first formed in Missouri in 1921, with both being merged in 1929 into holding company The Aviation Corporation. This in turn, was made in 1930 into an operating company and rebranded as American Airways. In 1934, when new laws and attrition of mail contracts forced many airlines to reorganize, the corporation redid its routes into a connected system, and was renamed American Airlines. Between 1970 and 2000, the company grew into being an international carrier, purchasing Trans World Airlines in 2001. In 2011, due to a downturn in the airline industry, American Airlines' parent company AMR Corporation filed for bankruptcy protection. In 2013, US Airways and American Airlines merged.
