Graeb, Carl Georg Anton -- Ansicht des Schlosses Babelsberg mit dem Schinkeloktogon von Westen aus.Aquarell. 24,8 x 35,2 cm. Um 1850.Carl Graeb fertigte zwischen 1850 und 1855 eine Reihe von Aquarellen von Schloss und Park Babelsberg, die sein außergewöhnliches Talent für die Landschafts- und Architekturmalerei unter Beweis stellen. Seine künstlerische Ausbildung begann im Atelier des Dekorationsmalers Karl Jakob Gerst, wo er die Grundlagen des Zeichnens erlernte. Anschließend vertiefte er sein Wissen in Vorlesungen an der Akademie der Künste, insbesondere im Landschaftszeichnen bei Karl Blechen sowie in Perspektive und Optik bei Johann Erdmann Hummel.Graeb schloss seine formale Ausbildung 1838 ab und unternahm bereits ein Jahr zuvor (oder im Frühjahr 1838) seine erste größere Reise, die ihn nach Tirol und Frankreich führte. Ab 1844 leitete er gemeinsam mit Gerst dessen Atelier. In dieser Zeit erhielt er bereits erste Aufträge von König Friedrich Wilhelm IV., was seine Bedeutung als Künstler weiter festigte.Seine Reisen führten ihn 1843 bis nach Italien und später auch in die Schweiz sowie die Niederlande. Oft unternahm er diese Reisen zusammen mit seinem Sohn Paul, der ebenfalls zeichnete. Beide dokumentierten ihre Reisen in Skizzenbüchern. Aufgewachsen im Berlin des Vormärz, erlebte Graeb die künstlerische Blüte der Schinkelzeit und die kulturellen Umwälzungen, die auf die Befreiungskriege folgten. Der persönliche Einsatz von König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. für Kunst und Kultur verlieh diesen Bestrebungen neuen Schwung, was insbesondere in Graebs Schaffenszeit zwischen 1848 und 1870 sichtbar wurde.Mit großer Akribie ging Graeb an die Darstellung seiner Innen- und Außenansichten. Er fertigte sorgfältige Skizzen mit Anmerkungen an, und zwischen der Bleistiftskizze und dem ausgeführten Blatt entstand häufig ein Aquarell, das als Vorlage für den Auftraggeber diente. Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Verwendung einer Kamera als Hilfsmittel, was in seinem Aquarell mit der Rückfront des Schlosses Babelsberg deutlich wird (op.cit. Harksen, Nr. 76). Das größere Format und die zittrigen Linien der Front deuten darauf hin, dass Graeb diese Striche zog, während das Blatt in die Kamera eingespannt war.Die für Graeb charakteristische Präzision in der Zeichnung hat er bei Gerst erlernt. Zudem eignete er sich im Theater wichtige Kenntnisse der Raumperspektive an, die für seine Innenraumaquarelle von großer Bedeutung waren. Diese Kombination aus technischer Präzision und künstlerischer Sensibilität macht Graeb zu einem herausragenden Vertreter seiner Zeit.Bei vorliegendem Aquarell handelt es sich um einen Entwurf zu der in Bleistift, teils farbig angelegten Zeichnung „Potsdam-Babelsberg. Blick von Westen auf das Schloß“, den Graeb um 1850 schuf (op.cit. Harksen, Nr. 74). Wir danken Prof. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, der die Autorschaft anhand des Originals bestätigt (mdl. am 5. Schultz / 1841 4/10".Der Danziger Johann Karl Schultz studiert zunächst an der dortigen Akademie unter Johann Adam Breysig, ab 1820 an der Berliner Akademie bei Johann Erdmann Hummel. 1823 geht er nach München und bildet sich bei Lorenzo Quaglio zum Architekturmaler aus. 1828 lässt er sich in Berlin nieder, 1832 wird er zum Leiter der Danziger Kunstschule ernannt. Schultz ist berühmt für seine sehr naturgetreuen und exakten Architekturbilder. Der Dom zu Roskilde ist die bedeutendste Kirche Dänemarks und mit ihrer Bauzeit von 1189 bis 1280 auch die älteste Kathedrale der Backsteingotik in ganz Skandinavien.
