Set of 17 Gothic corbels, 14th century.
In wood, with polychromy.
Measurements: 103 x 13 x 19 cm.(3); 90 x 100 x 20 cm.(14).
Group of seventeen beams from the Gothic period, probably from the ceiling of a monastery hall or other religious architecture. With a thick line, the drawings are stylised and inscribed in borders, with a predominance of red and green tones. The polychromy decorates three of its sides and is based on variations of fleur-de-lis alternating with animals from the rich iconographic heritage of the medieval bestiary. The beams are carved in a combination of flat sections and curved mouldings. The cut-outs in the wood harmonise with the sinuosity of the plant stems in the paintings. Some of them have one end carved in the form of navettes, indicating that they may have functioned as corbels or cornices. The symbolic language of animals in religious architecture was derived from literary sources, originating in primitive natural history manuals that were often accompanied by a moral lesson. The fleur-de-lis, which comes from heraldry, is the synthetic representation of the lily flower, and was applied to the religious sphere because of its relationship with the Virgin Mary, as a symbol of chastity and purity. Its three petals were also a metaphor for the Holy Trinity.
