A rare and large console table in white in black marble made by Gerard Holmens (1934-1995). Signed to base of left foot. Following his departure from stylized figuration in 1955, Gerard Holmens studied at the Municipal Art Academy of Ostend (1951–1953), the Academy of Antwerp (1955–56), the Academy of Ghent (1957–58), and at “La Grande Chaumière” in Paris (1957–58) under Ossip Zadkine. Holmens' search in 1965 led him to mobile stone sculptures, and following a trip to Ireland, the sculpture cycle “De Stilte” (The Silence) was born. He has been a resident of Vieuzos, France (high in the Pyrenees) since 1981. It is there that he produced a new body of work centered around the theme of the table, chair, or vehicle, which is laden with symbolism representing life and death, meaning and meaninglessness, eroticism, fatum, and horror. Lit.: N. Hostyn, Gerard Holmens, Beeldhouwwerken van 1955 tot heden, Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Oostende, 7.7.-2.9.1999 (tent.cat.), p. 14-15, ill. width 245 cm height 70 cm
