Paterson (Lieutenant William) A NARRATIVE OF FOUR JOURNEYS INTO THE COUNTRY OF THE HOTTENTOTS, AND
The Second Edition, Corrected. xii + 175 pages (+ 1 directions for placing of the plates), 19 engraved plates, large folding map trimmed close at the outer margin, contemporary full tree calf, eroded around the edges and especially at the bottom of the upper cover, rebacked preserved the original gilt decorated back strip which bears a red title label, some off setting of the plates and light foxing, flaw in the paper of leaf 121/122 without loss.
Book plate of Edna and Frank Bradlow on the front free endpaper.
Mendelssohn (Sidney) SOUTH AFRICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY volume 2 page 143-144: Mr. Paterson accompanied Colonel Gordon (Commander of the Troops of the Dutch East India Company in South Africa) and Jacob van Reenen in several trips to the interior. He remarked that he does not give a description of the Cape as he would be only repeating what Sparrman and Mason (Masson) had already communicated in their publications. In the course of his travels the author penetrated as far as Namaqualand on the west, and the Great Fish River on the south-east. Although the principal feature of ' the work is a description of the botanical specimens collected and noted by Mr. Paterson, there are many interesting notes respecting the natives, with a few remarks on the Dutch Colonists. The coloured plates mainly depict botanical specimens, but there is a curious illustration entitled "Boschemens Habitations."
