A rare pair of Macauley and Wade Foundry cast iron Four Seasons garden benches, circa 1870, each 180cm wide. Note: wooden seat slats have been replaced, photographs do not show benches in current condition but as they were several years ago.Provenance: private collection, purchased in the USA, circa 2015.Notes: The design of this seat, number 240338, was registered and patented at The Public Record Office by Morgan, Macaulay & Wade, the Bath Works, Rotherham, on 5th April, 1870. The pierced back with four oval panels, each depicting a labourer representing a season with attribute, interspersed with flowers and foliage, the scroll arms with masks to the angles, above splayed legs on pad feet. Though this design was registered in England by the Coalbrookdale firm in 1870, it was also manufactured and retailed in the United States. A nearly identical bench is illustrated in Barbara Israel, Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste, p. 175, pl. 4.24.
