An English Violoncello by William Forster (II) London 1795 labelled Made by William Forster Violin Violoncello and Bow Maker to Their Majesties . . . . London and inscribed William Forster London 1795 by the end pin the two-piece back of faint narrow curl the ribs and head of similar wood the table of medium grain the varnish of a dark red-brown colour length of back 30 in. (76.2 cm.) * The varnish of this instrument has suffered heat trauma and is in need of restoration. Apart from this the condition is fair with no serious structural cracks. The damaged label is probably a replacement. The (faint) inscription by the end pin is far more convincing and indicates that this is one of eight cellos made in 1795. The names of the recipients were recorded and published by his grandson Simon Andrew but there is no record of exactly which one this was beyond the certainty that it is not the one made that year for George the Third.
