Quinta edizione di questo importante trattato sull'armonia apparso a stampa per la prima volta a Venezia nel 1708. Questa guida al basso continuo del compositore toscano Francesco Gasperini non è il solo trattato teorico da lui composto, ma senza dubbio si tratta del più famoso e prezioso per la storia della musica: realizzato con chiaro intento didattico, l'armonico pratico mostra l'eccellente formazione teorica del suo Autore e denuncia sia il rispetto per la tradizione consolidata, sia l'apertura verso innovazioni originali e poco convenzionali all'epoca, come la regola dell'ottava o il ricorso a due bassi, uno per il continuo e uno per il violoncello.
