Surprise Flower Seller Musical Automaton by Lambert, c. 1915 With Simon & Halbig mould 1159 bisque head, open mouth, articulated blue glass eyes with mohair lashes, pierced ears, original brown mohair wig and bisque hands, a decorated tray suspended at her waist, on velvet-covered base with open-spring motor playing one air (a march) as figure turns and nods her head, blinks, raises a bouquet of flowers with her right hand and a flower-covered cone with her left to reveal a 1 3/4 in. (4,5 cm) bisque doll dancing on the tray. In original regional costume with restored skirt and sleeves, green velvet bodice, fragile silk shawl and headdress trimmed with coins and glass beads, figure 15 in. (38 cm), 20 1/2 in. (52 cm) in total, with LB key. An attractive example of a later French automaton with "surprise" action. "Bébé Russe" Musical Tea-Server Automaton by Leopold Lambert, c. 1900 With Simon & Halbig bisque head impressed "1159, Germany, S&H, Dep", open mouth, articulated blue glass eyes with mohair lashes, blonde mohair wig, bisque hands holding teapot and a tray with painted tea service, on velvet-covered base with open-spring mechanism playing a single air ("Marche Lorraine") as the figure turns and gently nods her head, blinks, lifts and twists the teapot as though pouring, and then proffers the tray with her other hand, in the original emerald-green and ivory satin costume trimmed with metallic rick-rack braid, height 19 1/2 in. (49 cm), (costume good, albeit with some wear to the sleeves, missing teapot handle), with iron LB key and tune-sheet. - A classic automaton in fresh original working condition!
