Edward an early British teddy bear with provenance circa 1919, with light golden mohair, orange and black glass eyes, pronounced muzzle, remains of black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with very large feet and cloth pads, hump and inoperative squeaker--14in. (35.5cm.) high (balding to body, general wear and thinning, eyes probably replaced); Edward was original owned by Robert Frederick (Fred Woolston), who was born in February 1919, in Rothley, Leicestershire where he grew up and he lived his whole life; he was removed from the family as it grew and was brought up by his aunt, it is believed that he was given the bear as some comfort during this period. This bear was a treasured possession and was also played with by his daughters. The lot comes with nice letter of provenance from his daughter and a photograph of holding one of his daughters and another of one of his daughters holding a different bear
Mother and Sheila Bear the childhood teddy bears of Judy, it is not certain who is who, one a 1930s Chad Valley teddy bear with golden mohair, orange and black glass eye, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched bulbous nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed limbs with felt pads, inoperative squeaker, celluloid covered button in ear and woven label on foot --14½in. (37cm.) high (bald spots, general wear and thinning, missing eye and damage to two pads); and a similar 1930s Merrythought teddy bear with woven label on foot (missing eye, bald spot on top of head and general wear) - Mother, Sheila and Baloo the bear in the next lot are all from Judy's daughter, a difficult decision to part with them, but hoping they will all find lovely homes
Baloo the childhood Chad Valley teddy bear of Judy, with golden mohair, orange and black glass eyes, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed limbs, card lined feet and inoperative squeaker --27in. (68cm.) high (pads replaced, general wear and thinning) - Judy spotted Baloo on a rare outing with her mother to the local department store Bobby & Co (circa 1936) in Thanet, Kent, she was smitten and sometime later (either birthday or Christmas) Baloo was unwrapped as a surprise present. By all accounts he was an extremely special and unusually extravagant present for her as they were a modest doctors family. The bears (including Mother and Sheila in the lot before) survived the upheaval of WW2, subsequent family moves and were still present at the vendor's family home
