Music.- Stolen Stradivarius.- Huberman (Bronislaw) Photographic portrait of Huberman playing the legendary 'Gibson, Huberman Stradivarius', 176 x 228mm., inscribed in ink beneath by Huberman, small chip to lower right corner, Paris, Studio Lipnitzki (stamped verso), [c.1930]; and Vol.1 of The Violin Times, 1893-1894 (a signed presentation copy from the editor Eugene Polonaski to the violinist and composer J. Harold Henry) (2)⁂ The 'Gibson, Huberman' Strad was stolen twice during Huberman's ownership. On the first occasion it was returned quickly after the theft. The second theft was on the evening of 28th February, 1936, backstage at Carnegie Hall. It was not recovered until 50 years later, as the result of a deathbed confession from musician Julian Altman. He claimed that he had bought it from a friend for $100. Altman's wife turned the Strad over to Lloyd's, which paid her a $263,000 finder's fee and then they sold the violin for $1.2 million to the English violinist Norbert Brainin. It is now owned by the American violinist Joshua Bell.
