Margaret Mary Tempest (British, 1892-1982) Little Grey Rabbit at Christmas signed lower left watercolour over pencil 12 x 8cm (5 x 3in) Exhibited: Alison Uttley, Little Grey Rabbit's Christmas, illus. ? Other Notes: Not enough is written about Margaret Tempest and her exquisite book illustrations. She was born in Ipswich and studied art at the Westminster School of Art in 1914. From 1929-1960 she collaborated with Alison Uttley to illustrate the Little Grey Rabbit books; 36 titles in all. The present picture is illustrated on page 23 of Little Grey Rabbit's Christmas (Collins Sons & Co Ltd, 1986). Tempest took inspiration from the line in the story: "Little Grey Rabbit looked up from her patty-pans and waved her rolling pin to direct operations." Conditon is fine.
