Sir Gerald Festus Kelly PRA RHA (1879-1972) Ma Than E Oil on Canvas, 97 x 84cm (38 x 33'') Exhibited: The Royal Academy London, Summer Exhibition 1938, Cat. No. 253; Brighton Exhibition 1938 untraced; The Royal Hibernian Academy 1939, Cat. No. 35 (N.F.S.); ''Sir Gerald Festus Kelly Retrospective Exhibition'', Royal Academy London 1957, Cat. No. 189, where lent by A.P. Reynolds Esq. In correspondence from the artist to the current owners in March 1969 in relation to this painting, Sir Gerald refers to it as ''one of the very best paintings I ever did of a Burmese Girl, who, by the way, was a little duck''. Sir Gerald Festus Kelly was born in London, 1879. He was educated at Eton College followed by Trinity College Cambridge. After his university studies he travelled to Paris where he remained for many years, receiving an artistic training and befriending Degas, Renoir, Monet, Rodin and Cezanne among others. Kelly travelled extensively during his lifetime, choosing exotic locations such as Burma and Africa as well as the closer climes of Italy and Spain for his inspiration. He painted many pictures of beautiful, porcelain-skinned young Burmese ladies, sometimes dancing but often posed as in this portrait, kneeling with a blanket covering their lower body. Although Kelly's choice of subject for his paintings was varied, it was perhaps for his portraits that he became best known, executing several State portraits and many paintings of society ladies and gentlemen, bishops and lords of the time. Brian Kennedy writes in his book 'Irish Art and Modernism 1880-1950' (p.167): Apart from Dermod O'Brien, the other outstanding portraitists year after year were Sir William Orpen (until 1917 when he last exhibited), Sir John Lavery and Sir Gerald Kelly, but as they lived in England their influence was less than it might otherwise have been. Sir Gerald Festus Kelly exhibited over 300 works at the Royal Academy in London from 1909 until 1970 and held the Presidency from 1949-54. This painting was shown at the Royal Academy in 1957 as part of the 'Sir Gerald Festus Kelly Retrospective Exhibition'. In Ireland Kelly exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1905-1969, the Oireachtas Art Exhibition in 1932 (No. 9 - Mrs Hamilton - 500 and No. 10 - Celestine del Pino of Trinidad - 600) and also at the Ulster Academy of Arts in 1948 (No. 41 - Her Majesty the Queen). Gerald Kelly received a knighthood in 1945 - no doubt for his astounding talent in representing people and places with extreme delicacy and beauty. He was a highly successful artist during his lifetime but his name seems not to have lived on as it did with his peers Sir William Orpen and Sir John Lavery. Sir Gerald Festus Kelly died in London in 1972. His work is housed in several public collections, among them the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Tate Gallery, London and the Royal College of Music, London. Literature: D. Hudson, 'For the Love of Painting - The Life of Sir Gerald Kelly', 1975; S.B. Kennedy, 'Irish Art and Modernism 1880-1950', Institute of Irish Studies, Queens University, Belfast, 1991; Brian Stewart and Mervyn Cutten, 'Dictionary of Painters in Britain up to 1920.

RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist Artist. A good and lengthy A.L.S., `Renoir´, three pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to an unidentified friend, in French. Renoir explains to his correspondent his meetings with Mr & Mrs Blanche, Mr. Lemoine and Madame Roper, referring to an antique pendulum purchase, to the progress of young painter, and even transcribing exact expressions of his interlocutors, and states in part `..I was introduced to Mr. Lemoine, who offered to me a cigar and invited me to visit him, I feel flattered for this.. but what I have to tell you is even more interesting, this is the fact. While I was strolling in Dieppe at Madame Ropert… I find a Louis XVI pendulum, I tell Madame Ropert, - this one is for Madame Blanche at least, - she will probably like it very much, but she has not seen it yet as I only received it yesterday. I have told her and I think she will like it. - How much. 300. All right. I´ll let you know tomorrow. I was going to ask you to go and watch it, in case I am doing a big folly, and if I was not buying a pendulum worth 15 francs...´ further saying `She asked me about your son´s paintings, and I responded he was making big progress, then she said "have you bought bibelots?", and I responded with serious convincing voice "I have bought a pendulum". Imagine Madame Blanche´s face exclaiming "I am sure it is my pendulum". I did not frown, and I responded "I don´t know, it is a cuckoo clock". She sighs.. and did not talk to me all through the evening.. Early this morning I went to see Madame Ropert and told her that I buy the pendulum but do not… if not I will not come back here ever again.´ and before concluding on a post-scriptum saying `After all it is expensive, but I hope I will not be ennoyed because of my three hundred francs.´ Very small and professional repair to the fold, otherwise G

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)Le Chapeau Épinglé (1re Plance) (see Delteil 6, Stella 6)The rare and previously unrecorded drypoint printing with rich burr, printed in dark brown ink, 1894-95, a unique proof printed before steel-facing and the bevelling of the plate, on laid paper, with full margins, 120 x 85mm (4 3/4 x 3 1/3in) (unframed)Both Delteil and Stella had only seen impressions of this work printed after the plate was steel-faced and mistakenly assumed the work to be an etching. This previously unknown impression printed prior to the steel-facing displays extremely rich burr and a delicate veil of plate tone, and thus we can unquestionably state that the work is indeed a drypoint engraving rather than an etching.

Literature/catalogue raisonne: Delteil 23; Stella 23. Comment(s): During the second half of the nineteenth century, France was experiencing a printmaking renaissance. Despite this artistic trend, Impressionists were not quick to adopt the medium as they were accustomed to painting in plein air. However, Renoir learned the medium, creating his first etching in 1890 and his first lithograph two years later. During this time, Renoir was 49 and already an established painter. Yet, he executed a total of 59 prints in his lifetime, producing almost equal amounts of lithographs and etchings. Impressively, he was able to develop his own style of etching independent of his development as a painter [courtesy Masterworks Fine Art]. [2646-3-300]

Presented here are two sterling examples of Christo's preparatory artworks for The Pont Neuf Wrapped and The Umbrellas, each project realised in 1985 and 1991 respectively. Internationally lauded and collected by museums that include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, USA, and the Tate collection, London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will play host to a major retrospective of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, opening in March 2020, before presenting one of their most significant and highly anticipated wrapped monuments in September; covering the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with 25,000 square meters of fabric for a period of 16 days. Contemplative and beautiful, Christo's practice emerged from the Nouveau Réalisme movement in Paris in the early 1960s alongside artists including Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely. Having fled the Eastern Bloc, escaping from Czechoslovakia to Vienna in 1957 before making his way to the French capital, the artist found his quintessential style early on, wrapping cans, bottles, shoes, and chairs in his Paris attic studio, before meeting his lifelong collaborator and wife Jeanne-Claude in 1958. Offered for sale are two preparatory renderings of a pair of enormously complex projects Christo and Jeanne-Claude would undertake years after their conception. The Pont Neuf Wrapped (Project For Paris) (1979) – one if the largest Christo works to ever come to market – and The Umbrellas (Joint project for Japan and USA) (1990) illustrate the extravagant conceptual mind that made Christo and Jeanne-Claude two of the most celebrated and admired creative visionaries of the last half century. The Pont-Neuf bridge was first completed in July 1606 and is the oldest bridge crossing the river Seine in the French capital. An icon of Paris, joining the left and right banks and the Île de la Cité for over 400 years, it has been immortalised in paint by J.M.W. Turner, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro alike. Joining such a canon of artists to tackle this historical site, the present work by the artist is a rare, large-scale, two-part study for the proposed project that took ten years of negotiations and two rejections before it was finally executed in 1985. Turning one of the most important pieces of architecture in Paris into a uniform façade of folds and bindings, Christo and Jeanne-Claude drew attention to the history, the design, and the mythology of the 'City of Light', highlighting the building blocks of a culture and a nation; appreciating them by veiling them. Documenting the ephemeral, 14-day event, the energetic diptych, The Pont Neuf Wrapped (Project For Paris), depicts a charming blend of studied, expressive and technical marks, combined with notes and comments by the artist's hand, capturing the committed and all-encompassing approach to what would become one of the duo's most iconic wrapped monuments. A thought-provoking and more politically weighted piece, The Umbrellas (Joint project for Japan and USA) depicts one of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's most elaborate and poignant works of public sculpture, ambitiously constructed between two continents either side of the Pacific Ocean in 1991. From 9th October that year for 18 days, 3100 oversized umbrellas standing at little over 6 meters high, divided between two valleys in Japan and California, USA, were opened and stood silently and proudly as objects that sheltered and mirrored one another across nations that had previously known intolerable war against one another. Often rebutting the political or historical reading of their work, the couple's temporary monuments nonetheless consistently nudge a reading of them as being bound to their sites and their shapes, drawing attention to their location and social currency. In the present work, Christo's Japanese umbrellas dance through the valley of the Sato River, wonderfully depicted in vivid hues of green and blue, inscribed exuberantly in pencil on paper, alongside a technical map of the lowland in the Prefecture of Ibaraki. As much technical drawings as they are visions of a project to-be, the two diptychs by Christo offered here are superlative examples of the artists' fleeting monumental projects and their lasting preparatory studies.
