He joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in July 1872, and was advanced to Sub-Lieutenant in October 1878. Dodgson served with H.M.S. Orontes from October 1881 to January 1883, and was advanced to Captain in December 1901. He was in command of the depot ship H.M.S. Calliope, and the Kingstown Flotilla during naval manoeuvres in August 1903, when he met with a tragic end. Captain Dodgson had been involved in a serious bicycle accident five years prior, which had left him hospitalised and drifting in and out of consciousness for several months. Upon his return to service it would appear that he could no longer cope with the pressures, and tried to resign his commission. Having been persuaded that he would be a loss to the service, he carried on until 7 August 1903. On the latter date he retired to his cabin, wrote two letters including one to his wife, and then cut his own throat with a razor. He was buried with full military honours at Haslar Cemetery on 14 August 1903. Note: The recipient’s full-sized medals were sold in these rooms in March 2023.

HAYDN JOSEPH: (1732-1809) Austrian composer of the Classical period. A fine and rare printed musical score signed by Haydn, being the first British edition of Ariana a Naxos, Cantata a Voce Sola, accompagnata col Clavicembalo Forte-Piano, published by John Bland, London, n.d. (June 1791), the oblong folio score of eighteen pages ´printed for the Author & sold by him at No. 18 Great Pulteney Street, & at J. Blands Music Warehouse, 45 Holborn´. Signed (´Haydn´, with paraph manu propria) by the composer at the foot of the title page, which also bears the ownership signature of a Mrs. Rigby in the blank left margin. Handsomely and professionally bound in dark green cloth and quarter-morocco and with a gilt stamped title and four raised bands to the spine. Some very minor, light staining throughout, generally VGHaydn´s Arianna a Naxos (Hoboken Catalogue XXVIb:2), a composition for soprano and keyboard, was first performed in London by the mezzo-soprano castrato Gaspare Pacchierotti (1740-1821) in 1791 to the composer´s own piano accompaniment. The London engraver, printer, music seller and publisher John Bland first met Joseph Haydn during a visit to Vienna in November 1789 whilst in search of new works for publication. Legend has it that Bland, whilst in the company of Haydn during his grooming routine, overheard the composer complaining about his razors, Haydn declaring ´I would give my best quartet for a good razor!´ Bland subsequently hurried back to his quarters, quickly retrieved his new razors, made of fine English steel, and presented them to Haydn. The composer kept his word and in exchange presented Bland with the manuscript of his Quartet No. 46 in F Minor (Op. 55, No. 2; Hoboken Catalogue III:61) which is still known today as the ´Razor´ Quartet. This first encounter between Haydn and Bland led to what would become a long friendship as well as a profitable business relationship. Bland was instrumental in bringing Haydn to London and the composer stayed with his friend at Bland´s home on his first night in the city in January 1791, marking the beginning of what would prove to be a triumphant trip for Haydn. Audiences flocked to his concerts and as a result Haydn augmented his fame and became financially secure. Indeed, Haydn considered his two visits to London, in 1791-92 and 1794-95, as being the happiest days of his life.Haydn was a friend and mentor to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who he met around 1784. The two composers performed in string quartets together and Haydn, impressed with Mozart´s work, praised him unreservedly. For his part, Mozart returned the esteem and dedicated a set of six quartets to him, the ´Haydn´ Quartets (1785).

Registration No: KSG 557 Chassis No: TDC 1490 MOT: ExemptEntered from a deceased estate Dry stored for a number of years, but started and driven during our recent photography sessionDesirable (and transferable) cherished registration number Supplied with the original folding logbook Current ownership since 1993The first car to carry the Triumph badge following the company’s takeover by the Standard Motor Company, the Triumph Renown was rushed out within months of the end of the war to cash in on the booming post-war export market. The cars were coachbuilt by Mulliner of Birmingham in the ‘Razor Edge’ style that was all the rage on prestigious models of the late 1930s/early 1940s from makes like Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Due to post-war steel shortages, most of the body panels were in lightweight aluminium over a traditional ash frame. In 1949, the original 1.8-litre engine was replaced by the excellent Standard 2,088cc unit and three-speed column-change gearbox which literally transformed the car, giving 75mph performance. In 1949 things got better still with the launch of the TDB which had much-improved coil spring front suspension (rather than transverse leaf) and the option of overdrive. From 1952 a stretched TDC model was available which gave significantly more legroom for rear seat passengers, had a larger rear window and push-button rather than lever-operated door handles. Just 9,301 Renowns were built in total of which only 2,609 were TDC models and only a tiny handful survive today, making this a rare car indeed. This Renown TDC dates from 1953 and has been consigned to us from a deceased estate. Finished in striking Black, with a contrasting Cream interior; the Saloon is described by a representative of the vendor’s family as ‘Average’ with regard to the paintwork, ‘Good’ with reference to its bodywork and electrical equipment, whilst the engine, transmission and interior trim are described as ‘Very Good’. Starting easily and running nicely as we moved it around for these photographs, this extremely rare and quirky pocket limousine looks excellent value (considering it is being offered entirely without reserve!). Offered with a large selection of paperwork and history, including the original folding logbook, expired MOT certificates, tax discs and sundry correspondence. Lot 51

Registration No: ML59 XEJ Chassis No: SHHFN23809U000304 MOT: October 2025Just one owner and offered directly from that ownerWarranted c.3,300 miles from newNumber 29 of approximately 600 Championship White Editions reputedly supplied to the UKCompletely unmolested and originalUndoubtedly one for the collector – find another!Described as ‘the most involving and rewarding performance hatchback on the market thanks to its lightweight, razor-sharp steering and a perfectly balanced chassis’, the Honda Civic is fast becoming a vehicle for the collector. The FN2 Civic Type R arrived in the UK in 2007, gone was the previous car’s floating dashboard with high-mounted gearshift; a wide, expansive dash now took its place, with a raised centre console, clusters of switches grouped close to the steering wheel and a split-level instrument cluster placing the speedometer just below the bottom of the windscreen. The powertrain was very similar to that of the previous EP3, with the same 1998cc 2-litre K20 four-cylinder VTEC engine under the bonnet. Producing 198bhp, the FN2 had a deeper, richer sound and also felt more refined. The last naturally aspirated Type R produced, the FN2 is surely one for the history books. The Championship White Edition cost an additional £1,140 above the standard Type R and featured an all-White colour scheme and a limited-slip differential. The paint was chosen to pay homage to the Type R's heritage and the differential ensured a more accurate driving experience. Very well received; one review described the Championship as "one of the most agile and engaging hot hatches around, offering masses of grip and precise, communicative steering", placing it above a Mountune Focus ST and Golf GTI Pirelli in a group test. No wonder they proved popular; with approximately 600 Championship White Edition examples sold in the United Kingdom.Supplied new by ALM Garage Honda of Macclesfield to its first and only owner, ‘ML59 XEJ’ was registered new on the 30th November 2009 and is number ‘0029’ of the Championship Editions. Benefitting from the GT pack (which came standard on Championship cars) consisting of cruise control, dual-zone climate control, electric folding mirrors, cooled airbox, fog lights, and automatic wipers, the Type R has been used incredibly sparingly throughout the vendor’s ownership, with a mere c.3,300 warranted miles from new having been amassed across the fifteen-year custodianship. Now offered for sale directly from the sole owner, the Civic is a completely unmolested and original example.Accompanied to sale by the original book pack with owner’s manual and service book presented in the Honda wallet, as well as purchase documentation including the purchase invoice and order form, numerous previous MOT certificates showing excellent advisory history and V5C document showing no former keepers. In addition, ‘ML59 XEJ’ boasts the original dealer number plates, rear windscreen sticker and original accessories. Rated as ‘excellent’ throughout (comprising engine, gearbox, electrics, bodywork, paintwork, and interior), finding another with this mileage is surely unrepeatable and this example would be a great addition to any collection!
