The Soudan campaign pair awarded to Lieutenant M. H. M. Seymour, Royal Navy, who was killed in action at the battle of Tofrek on 23 March 1885 Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 2 clasps, Suakin 1885, Tofrek (Lieut. M. H. Seymour R.N. H.M.S. Dolphin.) impressed naming; Khedive’s Star, dated 1884-6, extremely fine (2) £6,000-£8,000 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Montague Hamilton March Gruggen (changed to Seymour in 1876) was born in Chichester, Sussex, on 29 September 1854, and entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in Britannia in January 1868. Appointed a Midshipman in January 1870, he enjoyed varied service over the coming decade and was advanced to Sub. Lieutenant in July 1874 and to Lieutenant in August 1878. Having then attended torpedo and gunnery courses, and continued his studies at the R.N.C. Greenwich, he was appointed to H.M.S. Dolphin for services in Egypt and the Sudan. Seymour was subsequently selected as a member of the Royal Marine Battalion assigned to Sir John McNeill’s column for the advance on Tamaai; a vast, unwieldy column with some 1,500 baggage animals, its progress was slowed by the harsh terrain and thick bush. On 23 March the force halted at Tofrek, about six miles from Suakin, and work was commenced in constructing a three-square defensive zeriba. Command of one of the redoubts, protecting the square entrusted to the Royal Berkshire Regiment, was given to Seymour. However, as work was still proceeding, a report was received of ‘the enemy collecting to the front’, swiftly followed by another with news that they were ‘advancing rapidly’. Sir John McNeill immediately gave orders to call in the working parties and in the next instant the cavalry came galloping in and, close behind them, a howling mob of 5,000 Hadendoa tribesmen. The working party of the Berkshire Regiment rushed back into their zeriba, and stood to their arms, moments before for the main thrust of the enemy’s attack fell upon their position. Swarming over the low bush fence and unfinished sandbag parapet at the south-west salient, the Hadendoa set about the defenders with their long razor sharp swords, and it was in the course of this determined assault that Seymour and five of his bluejackets, who had charge of the Gardner guns, were overrun and killed, and two of his sailors wounded; the Gardner guns were in the process of being placed in position at the time of the attack, and jammed after firing only a few rounds. The battle lasted just 20 minutes but was marked for its acts of bravery and the fanatical devotion of the Hadendoa. As the smoke and dust cleared away, a shambles of bodies of men and animals was revealed. The British lost seven officers and 63 men killed, and six officers and 89 men wounded. And there were 80 casualties amongst the Indian infantry along with 150 civilian camel drivers and 750 transport animals killed or maimed. Added to which at least 1,500 of the Hadendoa tribesmen suffered death or wounds around and within the zeribas. Sold with copied record of service and other research.

Excellent condition throughoutLow mileage exampleCollector quality exampleFirst registered on 22nd of November 2002, this lovely Mercedes-Benz SL500 has spent its entire life with two lady owners in London. Prior to us, The vehicle has been looked after by Klasse of Fulham, where documented invoices show money does not appear to have been a consideration in its maintenance. The subtle dark blue coachwork adds a purposeful and discreet air to a car that already throbs with latent menace. It all aligns well too, but then that’s only to be expected given its charmed life. It has razor-sharp shutlines and panel alignment and almost impeccable paintwork. Its got the bi-Xenon headlights plus that complex but incredibly effective folding metal roof. Obviously, the latter works as it should, furling and unfurling on command and providing what might just be the most effective convertible experience available anywhere for less than six-figures.The AMG 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are unsullied and fitted with matching Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres, all of which have good tread. The grey leather interior features heated and cooled electric front seats, burr walnut trim, a wind deflector, a first aid kit and fire extinguisher and a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system. As you’d expect given its low mileage and careful curation, it is in a stunning condition with barely a mark much less any significant wear. The SL’s service history is a bit of a dream, having been serviced on the dot from the beginning and contrary to the usual practice, the regimen was stepped up as it got older, being serviced every year regardless of mileage. It features a high-capacity battery, Active Body Control, and the five-speed automatic gearbox. Plus, of course, that staggeringly effective five-litre V8 engine; with 302bhp and 339lb/ft of torque at the driver’s disposal, it can hit 62mph in just over six seconds, which should be quick enough to silence anyone who tells you that its more of a boulevard cruiser than a sportscar – if, that is, you can hear them over the sound of that wonderfully gruff exhaust note! A unusual, interesting, and potentially important group of United States Korean War Prisoner of War items, once belonging to 0-1308131 Major, later Lt-Col Harry Fleming of the United States Infantry. To include: a green military knapsack with shoulder strap, which contains a green enamelware mug with Chinese characters to base, a Chinese tin containing a type of grease, an empty American Red Cross razor box, an American Red Cross drawstring bag (with red ink stamps), 2 x handkerchiefs with one having an ink stamp that reads ‘Harry Fleming 01308131 Captain Infantry’ and the other with a faint Chinese character ink stamp, 2 metal dog tags stamped to ‘Fleming,Harry 01308131 T44-45 O No Pref’, 2 tie on paper labels, one named to ‘Fleming Harry 0-1308131’ with an ink stamp for ‘AG Casualty EUSAK’ (Eight United States Army Korea). Plus, what appears to be a Chinese labourers style thin cloth cap, with faint inked issue mark to to the inside, and a crudely embroidered letter ‘F’ to the front (possibly for Fleming?). Notes: Major, later Lt-Col Harry Fleming holds the dubious distinction of being the first ever United States officer that faced a Court Martial for collaboration with his Chinese captors. Fleming joined the army as private in 1942, with his dog tags showing that he received a tetanus injection in 1944-45. He deployed in Korea in 1950, spending 50 days in combat, and 34 mon ths in captivity (which is when he would have received his Red Cross parcels). Fleming would appear to have taken on the role as camp leader, mainly because he maintained a friendly relationship with his captors. He is alleged to have made Red Propaganda recordings, and led Marxist Study Groups. Fleming was held prisoner until September 4th 1953. Upon his return to the United States, he faced a Court Martial at Fort Sheridan, where he denied aiding and collaborating with the enemy on 7 occasions. Addressing his accusers, Fleming said; None of my accusers ever had the guts enough to meet me face to face until now’. ’What I did, I did for the camp. Many of those came alive, as well as some of my accusers, would be buried in a Korean hillside except for some of the policies I went through with. I can definitely show through witnesses, that their lives were saved’. Lt-Col Fleming’s defence would argue that the decisions that he made were under extreme duress, and with threats of death. Fleming was eventually convicted, and would go on to make a failed appeal against his conviction in 1957, after which he left the army. A very interesting, and scare group of POW items, and worthy of much more research. Condition: generally good. Some service and age related wear to some pieces. One of the handkerchiefs has some holes in it, possibly from moths (non active now). The enamelled finish to the mug is chipped a little, as is quite normal with these types of wares. The Chinese cap haas some discolouration / fading, but is nevertheless intact.
