Crawhall (Joseph) A Jubilee Thought, presentation copy from the author to his daughter, [i], 77pp., one of 50 copies, hand-coloured woodcut illustrations throughout, 2pp. press notices at end, 2 Crawhall woodcuts plates tipped in to rear endpaper and paste-down, browning, light water-staining and foxing to paste-downs and endpapers, several ff. with edges chipped, title and final leaf reinforced at inner margin, 1f. loose, original half vellum, printed boards with hand-coloured vignettes, rebacked with original spine laid down, 4to, Newcastle upon Tyne, Mawson, Swan, & Morgan, 1887. *** Inscription reads "Elspeth Crawhall Challoner with her Father's Dear love. July. 1887." This book also appeared in the same size in black and white. Printed from the original blocks, this celebrates Victoria's Jubilee, and includes portraits of Sir Walter Raleigh, King Alfred, Raphael and the Madonna, and again, a self-caricature (p.54). This work displays well Crawhall's talent particularly for working in dialect or in the comic vein.
