Ladi Kwali (1925-1983)was a Nigerian potter, the only woman potter in Michael Cardew`s pottery training centre in Abuja, his influence on her work produced works with a mix of traditional African and Western studio pottery. Nigeria`s best known potter, she was awarded the MBE in 1963. Kofi Athey who ran the Vume pottery in Ghana, worked with Cardew and started up the Jos pottery in Nigeria in 1963. A Winchcombe pottery jug of baluster form with slightly ribbed sides and sgraffito style decoration, indistinctly signed to base (possibly Michael Cardew) CONDITION REPORTS General wear and dirt and some scuffs and scratches. Chips to footrim. A blistered/bubbled effect to the glaze to the lower part of the body, and some of the lower edges of the sides are unglazed (please see photos for examples. Jug bears a swirling pattern to both sides. Slightly dull sound when tapped, possibly due to material or to fault line.

The lid of the pot with a tiny rim chip and a small chip to flange.

Michael Cardew (British, 1901-1983) Bowl and cover, circa 1946, Volta Pottery with a band design of bowed wheat sheaves, the cover with brush work motifs impressed potter`s and pottery seals twice (to the pot and cover) 20cm high, 25cm diameter. This is a rare piece of Cardew`s work from Vume Dugame, and is interesting as the lid doubles as a serving/subsidiary bowl.
Valerie Prescott (nee Bond) (British, b.1923) Two primitive bird dishes, circa 1950 one initialled `VB` 15cm across and 14cm across (2). Valerie Bond spent a year at the Leach Pottery (1945-46) after a chance encounter with Michael Cardew. Following which she studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art under Frank Dobson and John Skeaping and later taught pottery at the Camberwell School of Art, joining the staff in 1951. Her shapes at this point were based on primitive birds and she was encouraged by Hans Coper, who had seen her work at the Berkeley Gallery. Photographs of her birds were also shown at the Festival of Britain in London in 1951. Michael Cardew visited the mine where he worked for the day. This is probably a one-off as Michael Cardew said these were not his usual style.
