AN 18TH CENTURY GERMAN VARI-COLOURED GOLD, GREEN CHALCEDONY AND BURGAUTÉ SNUFF BOX unmarked, probably from the workshop of Heinrich Taddel, Dresden, circa 1750 unmarked, attributed to the workshop of Heinrich Taddel, oval-form, the green chalcedony or plasma cover inlaid with gold, silver and abalone (burgau) shell with a Chinoiserie landscape of a palm heart beneath a palm tree with a pagoda in the background, the rose gold mount with a guilloché engraved band and an applied lemon gold and silver floral thumbpiece, the stone sides and base similarly decorated with domestic and landscape Chinoiserie vignettes. 7.5cm wideCollected by the 7th Duke of Wellington.For similar boxes and a discussion on the attribution of this type of 'pique' decorated hardstone, see Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes (Los Angeles 1991), pages 171 ff, cat nos. 61, 62 and 63. Meissen : A pair of hand painted ceramic figures of a young gardener and a girl. Both stood on Rococo gilt painted C-scroll domed bases. Bearing the blue crossed swords mark under with impressed marks '1738 II' & 'G0301', approximately 12.5 cm high Condition Report: all well except one small fault, the fore finger ( proud) on male figure's left hand has broken otherwise all digits to hands and feet on both figures intact ) I cannot help but think a leaf to the sprig being held by the male has broken ( but this is not easily visible and I am being very pernickety !)

A group of four: 1. a 19th century Meissen-style porcelain figure of a harlequin playing the bagpipes, after the Meissen original modelled by Kändler, blue crossed-swords mark, possibly Vienna, (13.3 cm high), restorations. 2. a pair of Victorian Derby porcelain covered vases, red printed factory marks and 1888 date cipher, ovoid form on a pedestal foot, richly decorated in gilt on a cobalt-blue ground with birds and butterflies amidst branches of blossom, with conforming domed covers (13 cm high), faults. 3. a small creamware-style figure of a crowned lion, 20th century, painted monogram 'DB' to base, (10.2 cm high). - Harlequin: Old restorations to the hat, pipes and right hand. Minor gilt wear. No other faults.- Vases: Both with a little gilt wear. One vase with very small chip to inside edge of the rim. One cover lacks the finial and the other cover has been broken and has old glued repairs.- Lion: Small glaze chip to back of mane. Otherwise good.
