A wooden mantelpiece ornament. Probably originally housing a clock. Formed from a section of the central boss of a laminated 2-bladed propeller. The eight bolt holes each covered by a small mother-of-pearl airship, supported on 4 columns, in the centre of which is mounted an enamelled RAF sweetheart brooch, the whole on an oblong rectangular base. A Japanese Miyao bronze figure of a standing warrior (possibly intended to represent Tokugawa Ieyasu), he stands wearing full armour over which is a haori decorated with a dragon above waves, he holds his baton of office in his right hand, a fan in his raised left hand, signed Miyao with seal, 28.5cm high (bronze) 37cm overall, Meiji period, on original wood stand. Provenance: Frederick Johnson, there is a photo of this bronze on the mantelpiece in his house in Thornton Heath (c.1910)
A Miyao style bronze group of a lacquer artist working on a Daruma doll, Darumaâs head hinged to reveal an inkwell within; the whole mounted on a wood stand with gold lacquer Karakusa, Meiji period, height of bronze 7.1cm, 11.5cm overall. Provenance: Frederick Johnson, there is a photo of this bronze on the mantelpiece in his house in Thornton Heath (c.1910)
A French Art Nouveau walnut and marquetry mantelpiece and mirror by Majorelle, in two sections, 245cm high Provenance: Peter Grant (1935-1995), thence by descent. The man who Led Zeppelin: Peter Grant was, most famously, the manager of the band Led Zeppelin. Early in his life he had worked as a bouncer, wrestler and a film extra in movies such as The Guns of Navarone and Cleopatra. He became tour manager of Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Gene Vincent and The Animals before taking on the Yardbirds, who were later to become Led Zeppelin. When he flew to New York in 1968 to sign Led Zeppelin to Atlantic Records he secured the highest advance paid to any band at that time. He was instrumental in catapulting Led Zeppelin to superstardom and became one of the most powerful men in the music industry. This collection of Art Nouveau furniture and pictures were formed by Peter Grant whilst touring America and Europe with the band in the 1970s. Between concerts Peter Grant and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page would often visit antique markets and shops as they shared a passion for collecting Art Nouveau and Art Deco furniture and objects.

ELLEN MARY ROPE. DESIGN FOR A CHARGER, DATED 1899. watercolour, circular, stuck down, inscribed in pencil to the reverse `West Nursery Paper (or Poster) 1899 E.M. Rope`. 54cm diameter. Note; Ellen Mary Rope designed for the Della Robbia Pottery, Birkenhead, from 1886 until its closure in 1906 and so the present work would have been produced by her during this period. Her work was very much in the Arts and Crafts Movement tradition and was seen at each Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society exhibition from 1889. She showed panels for ceiling, wall, mantelpiece and nursery decoration and it may be that this design was an entry to such an exhibition..

A 1790 wooden jigsaw puzzle by John Wallis, 'Domestic Happiness Dissected', comprising fifty-five solid softwood pieces, 21.5xm x 21.5cm, in original mahogany slide-top box (one replacement piece in mantelpiece, plus some border nibs). Note: John Wallis founded his publishing business in 1775. From 1778 until 1805 the firm was at 16 Ludgate Street, London. See Hannas, The English Jigsaw Puzzle.
