TOLKIEN J. R. R.: (1892-1973) English Writer, author of the classic fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. A.L.S., J R R Tolkien, two pages, 4to, n.p. (Oxford), 10th April 1969, to Mrs. Mroczkowski (wife of Professor Przemysalw Mroczkowski), on the blue printed stationery of George Allen & Unwin Ltd. Tolkien states that he now lives in retirement and has endeavoured to keep his address secret from the Press `and all other intruders who have made it impossible for me to do any more writing`, further adding that he is now feeling his age, largely because of an accident which crippled him. He adds that he remembers his correspondent`s husband, and also regrets that he cannot help her daughter with a thesis although he would have been happy to do so given more time, `She writes a very good intelligent and perceptive letter. Indeed I think she displays more understanding than the "high authorities" who altered her title.` In concluding Tolkien comments on the difficulties of writing letters to and from Poland, hoping that he has time to write a letter that will reach Mroczkowski before the 20th April and remarking `It is unfortunate that the next few days are already much occupied. My three sons, my lawyer, and my publisher, are all descending upon me to settle urgent affairs.` In a footnote to the first page Tolkien explains that his publishers office in London is now his official address, where he has a secretary who immediately forwards any letters marked Personal to him, and such letters generally get answered quicker as `they do not get lost among notes, manuscripts and other papers`. TOLKIEN J. R. R.: (1892-1973) English Writer, author of the classic fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. A.L.S., J R R Tolkien, one page, 8vo, Headington, Oxford, 19th November 1957, to [Professor Przemyslaw] Mroczkowski (`My dear Mroczkowski`). Tokien states that he and his wife are grateful to their correspondent for his invitation and continues to politely explain that they will not be able to manage the date suggested and hoping that there will be a chance to be asked again. The writer adds that, if he does go to America, it will not be until the middle of March at the earliest. In concluding Tolkien remarks `I do not understand your use of "bold"! It`s extraordinarily kind of you both to bother about us. We are quite unimportant people. And I do hope that as I have been bold enough to address you as a colleague without title you will please do the same to me.` One very slight, minor smudge affects a couple of words (which remain perfectly legible) and not the signature. Signed by the author to front endpaper. J.R.R. Tolkien's award-winning fantasy novel was published on 21 September 1937, with 1500 copies printed, which sold out by 15 December. Originally concieved in the late 1920's-early 1930's to entertain his three sons, Tolkien recalled in 1955 in a letter to W.H. Auden: 'All I can remember about the start of The Hobbit is sitting correcting School Certificate papers in the everlasting weariness of that annual task forced on impecunious academics with children. On a blank leaf I scrawled: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." I did not and do not know why. I did nothing about it, for a long time, and for some years I got no further than the production of Thror's Map. But it became The Hobbit in the early 1930's...'. The book has gone on to sell an estimated 100 million copies worldwide since first publication and was never out of print. Tolkien began work on The Lord of the Rings in December 1937 after publishers George Allen & Unwin encouraged the author, against his inclination, to write a sequel. Hammond & Anderson A3. (1)
