A Rare 18 Carat Gold Enamel Memorial Ring, for Lord Byron, a central plaque with an enamelled coronet surmounting the name 'Byron' in gilt script to a black enamel ground, to a black enamel band with 'In Memory Of' in gilt script, between heavily floral chased outer bands, the inner band engraved 'Died 19 April 1824 Aged 36', finger size O1/2, 8mm wide see illustrationProvenance: By descent, reputedly, from the contents of Newstead Abbey via Pepper Arden Hall, Northallerton; Newstead Abbey was purchased in 1861 by William Frederick Webb from Col. Thomas Wildman, who in turn had purchased the estate and its contents from his school friend Lord Byron in 1818.Sir Herbert Chermside married Geraldine Webb, heiress at Newstead Abbey, where Lord Byron had lived. Sir Herbert and Geraldine lived at Newstead Abbey with Ethel Webb, Geraldine's sister. William Frederick Webb, their father, had died in 1899 and their mother in 1889. Geraldine had expressed a desire to live at Pepper Arden Hall and Sir Herbert bought the estate in 1909. However, Geraldine died in 1910. Ethel Webb succeeded her sister as life tenant at Newstead Abbey and Sir Herbert continued to spend a large part of his time at Newstead. Ethel Webb died unexpectedly in February, 1915. In her will she left the entire contents of Newstead Abbey to her brother-in-law, Sir Herbert Chermside. He based himself at Newstead and only moved himself and the heirlooms to Pepper Arden Hall around 1919, after the First World War had ended. Pepper Arden Hall, and all its contents, and the Estate, was inherited by Richard Gatty from his Uncle Chermside, when he died in 1929, without issue. The Byron Ring has been at Pepper Arden Hall since around 1919, when Sir Herbert Chermside brought all the Newstead Abbey heirlooms to Pepper Arden. There are believed to be only two recorded examples of Lord Byron memorial rings of this type; one of which was sold at auction by Gorringes, Lot 1057, February 2013, and reputedly previously sold by Christie's, London, on January 17th, 1899, Lot 26. The other known example being in the Pforzheimer collection, New York Public Library.
