F, 18.5cm high See illustration This form of English delft puzzle jug, with its distinctive knopped neck, seems to be peculiar to the second half of the 17th century. An example dated 1653 is illustrated in Archer (Michael) Delftware, pg.192, item D8. A similar undated example, with related decoration, is illustrated in the same publication, pg.194, item D10, which is dated to circa 1669-1675 due to the Ming Transitional style of decoration of parallel appearance on a mug in the Fitzwilliam Collection, dated 1669, and a jug in the Longridge Collection, dated 1674. An example of the same shape in the Maidstone Museum is dated 1675. For a similar undated example see Christie's, New York, 24 January 2011, The Cyd Levethan Longridge Collection, lot 86.. The current lot is most like two chargers illustrated by Leslie B Grigsby, The Longridge Collection (2000), p.67, D33 and by Michael Archer, Delftware in the Fitzwilliam Museum (2013), p.13, A.15. The suggested attribution to Norfolk House is based on a fragment with a similar distinctive setting excavated by Garner in Lambeth. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A very similar charger is discussed by Michael Archer, Delftware in the Fitzwilliam Museum (2013), p.55, A.82. This charger has the same turquoise green leaves as the present lot, a pigment which seems to replace the grassier green used on earlier chargers of this type in the latter part of the 17th century. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A pair of London delftware plates, dated 1724Probably Vauxhall, of plain profile without footrims, painted in red and blue with three stylised flowers divided by long foliage and flanked by slender leaves, surmounted by the initials 'I B A', the date '1724' below, within blue concentric lines and a distinctive formal border, 21.3cm diam (2)Footnotes:A very similar plate is illustrated by Lipski and Archer, Dated English Delftware (1984), p.82, fig.328 and another by Ross E Taggart, Catalogue of the Burnap Collection (1967), p.56, fig.153.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A very rare delftware charger, dated 1703Probably London, with an everted rim and turned foot, painted in blue and yellow outlined in black with a windmill, the stone tower inscribed with the date '1703', before three cottages with distinctive fenestrated gable ends, smaller buildings and tall green sponged trees in the distance, similarly sponged bushes in the foreground, a blue line inside the 'blue dash' border around the rim, the back with a lead-tin glaze wash, 35cm diamFootnotes:A very similar charger decorated with a virtually identical scene dated 1704, no doubt from the same workshop, is in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection (accession no. 1937-200) and is illustrated by Lipski and Archer, Dated English Delftware (1984), p.36, no.88. Lipski and Archer note that this charger bears a number of similarities to two groups of English chargers - those painted with full-length portraits of William III similarly outlined in manganese with similar sponged tress in bright green, and 'blue dash' chargers painted with portraits of Queen Anne seated with her generals. It is interesting to note that, in common with the William III chargers, both the present charger and that in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection have tin-glaze washes to the back.A 'blue dash' dish attributed to London painted in a very similar palette and style with a figure on horseback is illustrated by Leslie B Grigsby, The Longridge Collection of English Slipware and Delftware (2000), Vol.2, p.64, no.D31 where it is suggested that this distinctive group may have been produced by a single individualistic workshop in England for a short period during the first decade of the 18th century. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
