Lot 187

Six Gilbert Adrian costume designs, probably for 'Hassan', 1924, pencil and watercolour, including two brightly coloured examples, signed 'Adrian'; the first showing a woman with elaborate fan-like headdress and slashed leotard; the second inspired by traditional Chinese costume, the man with exaggerated moustache and plumed hat, each 22x28cm; together with four others with numerous handwritten annotations, un-signed, each 19.5x27.5cm (6) 'Hassan' (full title: Hassan:The Story of Hassan of Baghdad and How he Came to Make the Golden Journey to Samarkand) was written by British poet, novelist and playwright James Elroy Flecker (5 Nov 1884 - 3 Jan 1915), and published posthumously in 1922. The five-act play was brought to the stage in 1924, where it ran at the Knickerbocker Theatre, Broadway, New York, from Sept 22nd-Oct 1924, produced by A.L Erlanger and staged by Basil Dean.In 1920 the young Gilbert Adrian began studying at the New York School for Fine and Applied Arts (now Parsons School of Design). During a secondment to their Paris campus, he was hired by Irving Berlin to design costumes for 'The Music Box Review' in New York. In 1924 Adrian designed his first costumes for film, having been approached by Natacha Rambova, wife of Rudolph Valentino, to work on the silent film 'A Sainted Devil'. Whilst there are no external documented attributions to Adrian having designed the costumes for 'Hassan', it is evident he was working in New York during this time, designing for the Broadway stage. Two handwritten annotations on the back of these designs correspond directly with the characters and casting of this production: No. 73; character 'Rafi' (played by Douglas Burbidge) and No.5: name of actor 'Dennis Esmonde' (who played the part of 'Abu Nowas'). The play also featured a 'Chinese Philosopher', played by John A. Regan. Other notable castings in 'Hassan' included: Mary Nash, Dennis Hoey and Violet Kemble-Cooper. CONDITION REPORT: Good condition with imperfections commensurate with their purpose. The two brightly coloured examples are the 'cleanest', the others with various smudges/marks to paper ground.

Knickerbocker Anthracite Coal Co. (Pennsylvania) December 2nd, 1865. Philadelphia. 10 shares. No.1480. Signed by Isaac Israel Hayes as president. Coal train on bridge passes mill. Miners and coal car, left. Woodchoppers, right. R-44 25 Cent certificate revenue stamp affixed. American Bank Note Company, printer. Light mounting stains on the back in the corners, minor stain and small piece out of the margin near the lower right corner. Fully issued, not cancelled. Isaac Israel Hayes was an Artic explorer who served as ship's surgeon during Elisha Kent Kane's 1852-53 Arctic expedition in search of John Franklin. In 1861 Hayes mounted his own expedition and claimed to have reached further North than anyone else, but this may have been erroneous. The advent of the Civil War dimmed the public's interest in Artic exploration, and Hayes was placed in charge of the Satterlee Hospital in Philadelphia. His celebrity status as an Artic explorer and Union General may have helped the organizers of Knickerbocker Anthracite Coal Company sell shares to trusting investors. The Hayes autograph is rarely encountered, and is prized by collectors of Artic history. From the John E. Herzog Collection.

MEM An original silk magical outfit with embroidered decoration MEM An original silk magical outfit with embroidered decoration, as owned and worn by Aleister Crowley, most famously in the celebrated 1934 Associated Press photograph of the great occultist with ceremonial dagger (see previous lot) and arms outstretched. This original set of robes consists of a black and white striped waistcoat with white buttons, with matching jacket and knickerbockers, all with embroidered decoration and tailored to comfortably accomodate a larger gentleman. A few stains to waistcoat and jacket and some tears to waistcoast and knickerbocker but without doubt a truly mesmerising item for any keen student of magickal lore. Provenance is impeccable, having come from the family of Deirde Patricia Maureen Doherty, later MacAlpine (b.1915), mother of Crowley`s son Aleister Ataturk, aka Randall Gair Crowley (1937-2002). Family tradition has it that Crowley gifted the set to Deirdre Doherty to provide for her and their son should the need ever arise.

Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919) was the 26th President of the United States(1901–1909). He is noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Movement, as well as his `cowboy` persona and robust masculinity.[4] He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the first incarnation of the short-lived Progressive (`Bull Moose`) Party of 1912. Before becoming President, he held offices at the city, state, and federal levels. Roosevelt`s achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. Roosevelt was 42 years old when sworn in as President of the United States in 1901, making him the youngest president ever.
