A Stoneware mallet shaped Vase, matte pitted and speckled glaze, with circular 'garlic' shaped mouth, slightly flattened tapering neck, mallet shaped body with writhen decoration, short tapered foot with un-glazed foot rim revealing a buff stoneware body, impressed LR monogram, 22cms high, the body 10cms wide.Provenance: By descent from the present owner's parents who were personal friends of both Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, who gifted the vase.
Lucie Rie (1902-1995). A large white glazed stoneware vase with flared trumpet neck, shouldered baluster body, covered in a thick slightly crazed white glaze, unglazed foot rim, cream overpainted base with highlighted monogram, 30.5cms high, 16.5cms wide at the rim, 15.5cms wide at the shoulder. (This repair was apparently carried out by Lucie Rie herself before gifting it to the present owners parents)Provenance: By descent from the present owners parents who were personal friends of both Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.

I am afraid I have taken rather a long time to get it woven as I have been travelling in India. There is a nylon loop at the top of the hanging - so it only needs one nail in the wall to hang it from. I hope you like it. Yours sincerely Peter Collingwood P.S. His wall hangings use the traditional craft to create visual abstraction and are admired worldwide. In 1952, Collingwood set up a studio at Archway in North London and sold his work in Liberty’s and Heal's. He also exhibited at the Red Rose Guild and the Arts and Crafts Society. He moved to Digswell Arts Trust in Hertfordshire, where he met and exhibited with Hans Coper. (D)Born in Finland, Muona and Lucie Rie both won gold medals at the Brussels International Exhibition, 1935. They were also both medallists in the Paris International Exhibition, 1937. EWEN HENDERSON (1934-2000) VESSEL, C1985 stoneware and porcelain, hand built from coloured clays with bubbled and cratered surface, 68cm h Powerful, individual, recognisable have all been used by distinguished critics of Studio Pottery to underline Ewen Henderson's significance. A ceramicist and artist who stood apart, unclassifiable yet with a claim to be one of the most influential British potters of the last quarter of the 20th century. Each of his handbuilt thin walled vessels of porcelain laminated to richly textured stoneware and often accented by limpid cream, blue, brown and green felspathic glazes, proclaim not only a technical inventiveness but also his originality.These are entirely works of the imagination but few push their chosen materials to such extremes, caring nothing for holes, fissures or stability. His time as a student at Camberwell in the mid 1960s coincided with the teaching of Hans Coper and Lucie Rie. Despite the uniqueness of the pots of his maturity he cannot altogether have remained aloof from their influence. There is a prevailing freshness about Ewen Henderson's work because his pots demonstrate that he never looked back, creating in the moment or looking to the future. Cyril Frankel described this sense of freedom as Henderson's quest "for the ideal form whilst rejecting the influence of the wheel". The present vessel is one of Henderson's largest, only 3cms shorter than that in the V & A (C176-1986) Good condition given the nature of the fabric

Stoneware, black glaze with incised spirals to the surface beneath the glaze, a short drip running from the rim, impressed HC sealH 10.4cm, D 7.1cmPROVENANCE: Collection of Donald and Phyllis Brook, and hence by descent. LITERATURE: Tony Birks 'Hans Coper', Marston House, 2005; p.41-54. Donald Brook (1907-2018) was a sculptor who was awarded a studio and residence at Digswell Arts Trust, living in the flat above Coper during their time there together. 'It was with Donald Brook and his wife Phyllis, partly because of proximity and partly because of temprament, that the warmest friendship developed. Games of chess brought the two men together, and long evening sessions waiting for the kiln to reach temperature would be spent playing chess and, when they could afford it, drinking whisky.'CONDITION: Professional restoration to a very small chip on the edge of the disc and to the inside of the rim, not detectable to the naked eye, otherwise in perfect condition with no further damage or restoration. A slight glaze irregularity at the rim of the foot but this is in the making.
JILL CROWLEY (BORN 1946) a hand built stoneware sculpture of a hand, incised signature J Crowley. 7ins (18cms) high, 11 1/2ins (29cms) across *Jill was born in Ireland and studied at the Royal College of Art when Hans Coper was then teaching. She is best known for producing models of hands and arms, and a series of human and animal heads.
