Stoneware, black glaze with incised spirals to the surface beneath the glaze, a short drip running from the rim, impressed HC sealH 10.4cm, D 7.1cm
PROVENANCE: Collection of Donald and Phyllis Brook, and hence by descent.
LITERATURE: Tony Birks 'Hans Coper', Marston House, 2005; p.41-54.
Donald Brook (1907-2018) was a sculptor who was awarded a studio and residence at Digswell Arts Trust, living in the flat above Coper during their time there together.
'It was with Donald Brook and his wife Phyllis, partly because of proximity and partly because of temprament, that the warmest friendship developed. Games of chess brought the two men together, and long evening sessions waiting for the kiln to reach temperature would be spent playing chess and, when they could afford it, drinking whisky.'
CONDITION: Professional restoration to a very small chip on the edge of the disc and to the inside of the rim, not detectable to the naked eye, otherwise in perfect condition with no further damage or restoration. A slight glaze irregularity at the rim of the foot but this is in the making.
