A RARE AND UNUSUAL JAPANESE POLEARM, 1600-1700, THE BLADE POSSIBLY 1500-1600, with steel blade of typical naginata shape with shinogi (longitudinal ridge line), forging and tempering patterns obscured by rubbing, most likely an older naginata which has been fitted to the iron socket and wooden pole, in its black lacquered scabbard, 281 cm overall, 56 cm blade¦¦This unusual type of socketed polearm is described in Roald Knutsen~s book ~Japanese Spears: polearms and their use in old Japan~ as a fukuro naginata: (figure 14 and 15, and discussion on p. 63) and states that they are rare. They are socketed, rather than having a tang, and therefore unlikely to be signed, and are difficult to date. The style is believed to have originated in the fourteenth century, though this example was most likely assembled around 1600-1700.¦¦In George Cameron Stone~s ~Glossary of ... Arms and Armour…~ he refers briefly (p. 464) to the type as being tsukushi naginata. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has an example bequeathed by Stone in 1935 (accession number 36.25.2031a, b).¦¦The Buki Sodekagami (guidebook relating to armours) by Kurihara Nobumitsu, published in 1843 refers to them as tsukushi naginata and includes several illustrations of this type.

Richard, Abbe Jerome, Description Historique et Critique de l'Italie, Ou Noveaux memoires sur l'etat actuel de son Gouvernement, des Sciences, des Arts, du Commerce, de la Population & de l'Histoire Naturelle, Novelle edition., 6 Vols., full vellum with gilt lettering to spines, Paris: Saillant-Desaint & J. M. Coru de la Goibrie, 1769 (6) Note: Written during Abbe Richard's own travels in Italy in 1762, this vast guidebook, famously employed by the Marquis de Sade during his travels in Italy during the mid-1770s, provides a detailed account of the state and life of Italy's major cities. Rome, Milan, Venice, Turin, Parma, Naples, and a number of smaller cities are carefully examined by Richard, who treats their description with the care many of his contemporaries applied to travels in the Holy Land. These volumes are perhaps most notable for the objectivity of their author, who, despite his own religious affiliation, is quite critical of what he perceived to be the church's outsized role in Italian life. Lot 187

Henry O'Neill (1798 - 1880)  'View of St. Brigid’s Cathedral, Kildare, prior to its restoration c. 1835,'  watercolour on paper, Signed (bottom lower left), in contemporary gilt frame, 26cms x 36cms (10 1/2" x 14"). Depicting the Cathedral of St. Brigid in Kildare, this watercolour by Henry O’Neill, painted around 1835, is a valuable record of the building prior to its restoration four decades later. Not far from the cathedral stands the round tower, and beside the tower a broken high cross—all elements of this medieval Christian site that survive today. By the time O’Neill depicted the cathedral, the building was roofless and essentially a ruin. In 1875, under the supervision of architect George Edmund Street, restoration work began. The work included a new roof, north transept, chancel and west wall. The square tower at the crossing of nave and aisles was also rebuilt. O’Neill’s watercolour shows the cathedral as it appeared prior to 1875, with its roofless nave and south transept. The viewpoint is from the south, and shows the south wall of the nave with six lancet windows. During Street’s restoration, these windows were recessed within new Gothic arches, built to link and reinforce the wall buttresses visible in the watercolour. There is no sign of the west gable in his view, although it does appear in a late eighteenth-century watercolour in the Beranger Collection in UCD, where it can be seen to be in an advanced state of collapse. In George Petrie’s view of Kildare Cathedral, published in 1820 in Thomas Cromwell’s Excursions in Ireland, the gable wall has completely collapsed. Like Petrie, O’Neill produced illustrations for William Frederick Wakeman’s 1835 guidebook Picturesque sketches of . . scenery of Ireland, and also for his Fourteen Views of the County of Wicklow, published that same year. As well as being an artist, O’Neill was a teacher; his manual for art students was published by George Rowney in 1846. He was also an antiquarian, and in 1857 published his most important work, illustrating the ancient high crosses of Ireland. A controversialist, his 1863 his Fine Arts of Ancient Ireland, illustrated by G. Hanlon, set out to refute conclusions reached by Petrie in the latter’s Ecclesiastical Architecture of Ireland. While Petrie established, after careful scientific study, that the round towers of Ireland were built during the Christian era, many antiquarians, including Henry O’Brien, Charles Vallencey and O’Neill, preferred to believe they were older buildings, built for fire worship or as Zoroastrian temples. *We would like to acknowledge the assistance of Dr. Peter Murray in cataloguing this lot.

Brunel... 1827'), text comprising an Introduction, dated January 1828 ('...The present undertaking was projected by M.I. Brunel Esq: F.R.S. whose works for Government have been equally creditable to his scientific abilities and to his personal character...'), and detailed commentary accompanying the illustrations on versos, 30 leaves, 'F & Z' watermark, some light dust-staining and small tears, original half calf with marbled boards, label with manuscript title 'SKETCHES relating to the TUNNEL.' on upper cover, oblong 8vo (102 x 175mm.), 1828Footnotes:MANUSCRIPT GUIDEBOOK FOR BRUNEL'S PIONEERING THAMES TUNNEL, 'THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD', SEEMINGLY DERIVING FROM HIS WORKSHOP. A handsome manuscript version of Marc Brunel's popular publication.Despite the proliferation of printed editions of Brunel's guide to the Thames Tunnel project, we have hitherto traced no other manuscript version of the guidebook. Printed guidebooks were produced from early 1827, in order to keep the project in the public eye over the long construction period and also to raise money from visitors to the works, and ran to some seventeen editions over the next thirty-five years, the last appearing in 1863 (for a detailed bibliography see Chrimes, Elton, May & Millet, The Triumphant Bore: A Celebration of Marc Brunel's Thames Tunnel, James Howden, [n.d.]). Marc Brunel himself was responsible for the composing the text, and the engraved plates were taken from drawings supplied by his workshop. Julia Elton in her essay 'The Tunnel in Print' notes that the first edition of March 1827 consisted of plates only, the text and introduction appearing the following August with the title as per our manuscript, Sketches and Memoranda of the works for the tunnel under the Thames. Regular updated editions followed, including translations in the major European languages, with the text constantly rewritten and updated. A month after our version, in February 1828, the printed book had a new title Sketches of the Works for the Tunnel under the Thames which it retained until 1830. Our fine manuscript version would seem to sit between the printed editions of December 1827 (cat. no. 58) and that of January 1828 (cat. no. 59), incorporating several amendments to the text made after 1827 - for example the reference to 'Mr Brunel' in the 1827 Introduction becomes the more formal 'M.I. Brunel Esq. F.R.S.' in both our version and the printed 1828 edition, as well as incorporating extra descriptive text, which might at first suggest that ours is a copy of the later edition. However, the possibility that ours came after the 1828 edition is ruled out by comparison of the meticulously executed illustrations. On comparison, it is noticeable that our drawings are largely unpopulated apart from the figures of workers in the shield. A recognisable top-hatted figure appears in two of the engravings but not in our drawings, that of the brick shaft and again in the longitudinal section of the tunnel, where the same figure observes the work from a niche in the tunnel wall. Similarly, the figure with the pickaxe is absent from our drawing of the shield, as are the figures and carriages from the plan showing the long transverse section of the tunnel. Our exquisite drawings would seem to bear more relation to the originals produced in the workshop (sold in these rooms, 15 November 2017, lot 78) where there is also favourable comparison of the handwriting here to that on a plan ascribed to Brunel's chief engineer, Joseph Pinchbeck. The paper bears the watermark 'F & Z', which is also seen on German paper of the same period. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A RARE PAIR OF TIANQI AND QIANGJIN LACQUER SQUARE 'FLORAL' INCENSE STANDS17th centuryEach finely incised and coloured in varying shades of red, green and burnt amber shading to black, all picked out with traces of gold filling the incisions, the square tops finely incised and gilt with a central panel depicting a gnarled branch of blossoming peonies, surrounded by a border enclosing four cartouches decorated with 'The Four Gentlemen', namely orchids, bamboo, prunus and chrysanthemums, all reserved on a diaper ground, the recessed waist with lotus designs over a broad, cusped and barbed apron also decorated with chrysanthemums, all raised on four tall curling legs painted with florettes and foliage, terminating in outward curving acanthus feet. Each 90.4cm (35 1/2in) high. (2).Footnotes:十七世紀 戧金填漆花卉紋香幾一對The present lot is a rare and fine example of the painted lacquer craftsmanship used for Imperial furniture in the Court, combining the techniques of qiangjin ('etched gold') with incised and gilt lines of the design, and tianqi ('filled-in') with applied coloured lacquer set in contrast to the ground colour. Both techniques served to accentuate the effect of opulence and richness of the design in the Palace setting. Compare with a similar lacquer 'dragon' incense stand, 17th century, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (acc.no.M.2004.51). See also a related incense stand in a woodblock print from Tan qing wan, late Ming dynasty, illustrated by C.Evarts, C.L.Ma Collection: Traditional Chinese Furniture from the Greater Shanxi Region, Hong Kong, 1999, p.200, where he also illustrates a related nanmu incense stand of similar shape, 18th century, no.98. Another related incense stand is in another woodblock print from Pipa ji, Wanli, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (I), Hong Kong, 2002, p.24. Stands were used in both religious and secular contexts and served a variety of purposes, as contemporaneous paintings and woodblock prints illustrate. They were usually positioned in the centre of a shrine or in a room, such stands often supported incense burners. The Buddhist world was thought of as being suffused with with clouds and wondrously fragrant incense, creating magical realms that uplifted and purified the spirit; incense carried the piety and the desire of the worshippers to the gods and brought down the deities' purifying breath. It thus created the ideal mood to sustain a great debate between the bodhisattva and the learned layman and spreads their wisdom throughout the world; see S.Handler, The austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Lacquer, Hong Kong, 2001, p.225.Incense was not just used during the performance of religious rituals; Sothern Song connoisseur, Zhao Xigu, in his guidebook focusing on the scholar's elegant taste, has a chapter on the antique zither referring to the burning of incense whilst playing. Incense purified and concentrated the mind, producing that exaltation necessary for both playing and appreciating music; see S.Handler, The Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Hong Kong, 2001, p.297. Stands also supported a variety of other objects including miniature gardens and antiques.See another 'elephant' incense stand, 18th century, with similarly decorated tall curling legs with slipper feet, which was sold at Bonhams London, 16 May 2019, lot 75, and a related 'dragon' incense stand, 17th century, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2019, lot 714.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: † TP† VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. She returned to New York in 1974 and continued to deal from her Park Avenue apartment until her death in 1988.Ubiquitous in Chinese painting, poetry, ornament, and in nature, the flowering plum, the inspiration for the present lot, is uncontested as China's favourite blossom. Over the centuries it has acquired a wealth of meaningful associations, not only foretelling the welcome coming of spring but also identified with understated elegance, the fragility and transience of female beauty, and the solitary enjoyment of nature by the noble recluse, detached from worldly pursuits. The famous Song dynasty scholar Su Dongpo (1037-1101) wrote in one poem that: 'The flowering plums' bones are of jade and snow, and their souls of ice', as the plum blossom was endowed with the Confucian virtues of resilience and perseverance for blossoming in deep winter.Stands and stools such as the present pair served a variety of purposes, as contemporaneous paintings and woodblock prints illustrate. They were usually positioned in the centre of a shrine or in a room and often supported incense burners. Incense was not just used during the performance of religious rituals as it often accompanied flower appreciation and tea drinking, demonstrating the essential role incense played as part of literati aesthetics and lifestyle. Incense also purified and concentrated the mind, producing that exaltation necessary for both playing and appreciating music. Lu Yu, a Southern Song scholar, often described the pleasure of reading while burning incense, a luxury he enjoyed despite an otherwise simple lifestyle due to his modest salary as a government official. 'Listening to the Qin', attributed to Emperor Huizong of the Song dynasty, depicts fragrant incense as the elegant companion to the sound of the guqin. Another Sothern Song connoisseur, Zhao Xigu, in his guidebook focusing on the scholar's elegant taste, has a chapter dedicated to the antique zither where he refers to the burning of incense whilst playing music; see S.Handler, The austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Lacquer, Hong Kong, 2001, p.225 and 297.Compare with a related 'prunus' flower tianqi and qiangjin incense stand, Kangxi, but additionally decorated with a dragon, illustrated in Ming Qing gongting jiaju daguan, vol.2, Beijing, 2006, p.637. See also a black lacquer stool and a zitan stool, both 'prunus' form, mid Qing dynasty, which are illustrated in Ming Qing gongting jiaju daguan, vol.1, Beijing, 2006, p.135, nos.116 and 117.The design of flowers and birds on the present lot, seems to be related to woodblock prints of flowers and birds, such as in the Jiezi yuan huazhuan (Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting), circa 1679, and the Shizhuzhai shuhua pu (Ten Bamboo Studio Manual of Calligraphy and Painting), printed between 1619 and 1633. The increasing availability of illustrated woodblock printed books helped facilitate their design on lacquer such as the present lot.A related 'prunus' qiangjin and tianqi lacquer stand, Kangxi, was sold at Sotheby's Paris, 6 July 2017, lot 55.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: † TP† VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A RARE PAIR OF TIANQI AND QIANGJIN LACQUER RECTANGULAR 'SHOU' INCENSE STANDS17th/18th centuryEach finely incised and coloured in varying shades of red, green and burnt amber shading to black, the large rectangular top decorated with intricate diaper designs centred by blossoming lotus and Shou characters, the recessed waist and spandrels defined by reticulated interlocking chilong designs, the aprons decorated with further sinuous chilong and blossoming lotus, the same motifs continuing onto the straight legs ending in hoof feet connected by rectangular stretchers. 71cm (27 1/2in) high x 44cm (17 1/4in) wide x 30cm (11 3/4in) deep. (2).Footnotes:十七/十八世紀 戧金填漆螭龍番蓮紋香幾一對Incense stands such as the present lot were a variation of the more traditional square and round form, which appear to have been in use from at least the 12th century; see, for example, the square stands supporting flower vases, which were carved in relief on the northern wall of tomb of Dong Ming in Houma, Shanxi Province, illustrated in Relief carved tombs of the Jin dynasty in Pingyang, Taiyuan, 1999.Stands were used in both religious and secular contexts and served a variety of purposes, as contemporaneous paintings and woodblock prints illustrate. Often positioned in the centre of a room, such stands often supported incense burners. Incense was not just burned during the performance of religious rituals; Sothern Song connoisseur, Zhao Xigu, in his guidebook focusing on the scholar's elegant taste, has a chapter on the antique zither referring to the burning of incense whilst playing. Incense purified and concentrated the mind, producing that exaltation necessary for both playing and appreciating music; see S.Handler, The Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Hong Kong, 2001, p.297. Stands also supported a variety of other objects including miniature gardens and antiques. Stands were designed with great attention to detail and form, pleasing to the eye from any angle. See for example, the painting (titled 'One or Two?'), circa 1700s, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, showing a painting of the Qianlong emperor seated, looking at antiques, and flanked by a pair of related stands, but supporting antiques, illustrated in The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, New Haven and London, 2010, pp.188-189. Just as other painted lacquer furniture, stands were decorated with patterns which were often drawn from the repertoire of designs destined for embroidered or woven silk textiles of the time; the diaper designs decorating the rectangular tops for instance, look similar to woven brocades dating tot he Kangxi period, decorated with geometric designs enclosing flowerheads, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Textiles and Embroideries of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2005, pp.46-47, nos.46-47. Compare the openwork fretwork and key-fret around the edges with those on a tianqi and qiangjin lacquer table, mid Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Imperial Furniture of Ming & Qing Dynasties: Classics of the Forbidden City, Beijing, 2008, p.155, no.175. See also a related painted lacquer low table, kang, decorated on the top with many Shou-characters, Qianlong, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Collections of the Palace Museum: Painted Furniture, Beijing, 2009, no.144. Compare also the geometric decoration on the top of the present stands with that on a black lacquer and mother of pearl inlaid incense burner stand, 16th century, illustrated by R.H.Ellsworth and N.Grindley, Chinese Furniture: One Hundred Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection, New York, 1996, pp.128-131, no.44.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: † TP† VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Cesare Roccheggiani (Italian, act. second half 19th century): A micromosaic inlaid black marble circular paneldepicting a bouquet of brightly coloured garden flowers, mounted within a pierced gilt bronze frame, the rear with gilt tooled makers mark, the panel, 27cm diameter, the frame, 33cm diameter Footnotes:As a member of a well-known dynasty of master mosaicists, Cesare Roccheggiani had a reputation as one of the most accomplished artists in Rome in the second half of the 19th century. Probably related to Lorenzo Roccheggiani, a late 18th century mosaicist at the Vatican workshop, he was possibly also related to Nicolo Roccheggiani, possibly Lorenzo's son and another artist at the Vatican a little later in the century. Previously thought to have been active in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in the period 1856-1864, little was known of Ceasre Roccheggiani before he established his own atelier. However, more recent examination of his mosaics suggests that he may have worked in the atelier of Michelangelo Barberi given the strong influence of the latter's style, and in some cases Rocchegiani directly copied some of Barberi's compositions, such as the famous 'Rome by Night and Day'. After Barberi's death in 1867, his studio continued under the direction of his daughter, Isabella, until 1873, the year before Roccheggiani first opened his own business. In the mid-19th Century nearly one hundred mosaicists were active in Rome, often small workshops producing large quantities of pieces on a small scale, to serve the burgeoning tourist trade. By comparison the best studios such as Roccheggiani's produced more substantial or finer micro-mosaics in much smaller quantities. These sought after works remained the preserve of the rich and powerful and many, often produced by the Vatican workshop, were either commissioned by aristocrats and monarchs or displayed at the major international exhibitions such as the Great Exhibition of 1851. A contemporary photograph of Roccheggiani's shop front shows the broad range of mosaics that his company offered and a guidebook to Rome lists him as a supplier of mosaic pictures, tables, cabinets, paper weights and gold ornaments (Murray, 1899, p. 22). Roccheggiani's mosaics were exhibited at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition at Philadelphia and the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880, and his standing was such that he served as a committee member for The Italian Exhibition in London in 1888.Examples of his work in the UK include an étagère with mosaics in the Gilbert Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, and a necklace in the British Museum, London (see Gabriel, 2000, no. 59; Gere, 1984, no. 966).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Henry O'Neill (1798 - 1880)  "View of St. Brigid?s Cathedral, Kildare, prior to its restoration c. 1835,"  watercolour on paper, Signed (bottom lower left), in contemporary gilt frame, 26cms x 36cms (10 1/2" x 14"). Depicting the Cathedral of St. Brigid in Kildare, this watercolour by Henry O?Neill, painted around 1835, is a valuable record of the building prior to its restoration four decades later. Not far from the cathedral stands the round tower, and beside the tower a broken high cross?all elements of this medieval Christian site that survive today. By the time O?Neill depicted the cathedral, the building was roofless and essentially a ruin. In 1875, under the supervision of architect George Edmund Street, restoration work began. The work included a new roof, north transept, chancel and west wall. The square tower at the crossing of nave and aisles was also rebuilt. O?Neill?s watercolour shows the cathedral as it appeared prior to 1875, with its roofless nave and south transept. The viewpoint is from the south, and shows the south wall of the nave with six lancet windows. During Street?s restoration, these windows were recessed within new Gothic arches, built to link and reinforce the wall buttresses visible in the watercolour. There is no sign of the west gable in his view, although it does appear in a late eighteenth-century watercolour in the Beranger Collection in UCD, where it can be seen to be in an advanced state of collapse. In George Petrie?s view of Kildare Cathedral, published in 1820 in Thomas Cromwell?s Excursions in Ireland, the gable wall has completely collapsed. Like Petrie, O?Neill produced illustrations for William Frederick Wakeman?s 1835 guidebook Picturesque sketches of . . scenery of Ireland, and also for his Fourteen Views of the County of Wicklow, published that same year. As well as being an artist, O?Neill was a teacher; his manual for art students was published by George Rowney in 1846. He was also an antiquarian, and in 1857 published his most important work, illustrating the ancient high crosses of Ireland. A controversialist, his 1863 his Fine Arts of Ancient Ireland, illustrated by G. Hanlon, set out to refute conclusions reached by Petrie in the latter?s Ecclesiastical Architecture of Ireland. While Petrie established, after careful scientific study, that the round towers of Ireland were built during the Christian era, many antiquarians, including Henry O?Brien, Charles Vallencey and O?Neill, preferred to believe they were older buildings, built for fire worship or as Zoroastrian temples. *We would like to acknowledge the assistance of Dr. Peter Murray in catalogue these lots.
