The emotive Second War King’s Commendation and Lloyd’s Medal for Bravery group of six awarded to Chief Officer F. B. Brown, Merchant Navy, the sole surviving crew member of the Arandora Star and one of ‘the bravest men who ever trod a deck’; a victim of Gunther Prien and the U-47, of Royal Oak notoriety, the ex-Blue Funnel ship was laden with German and Italian internees, bound for Canada, of whom over 600 lost their lives 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star, 1 clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Burma Star, 1 clasp, Pacific; War Medal 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf; Lloyd’s War Medal for Bravery at Sea (Chief Officer F. B. Brown, S.S. “Arandora Star” 2nd July 1940.) extremely fine (6) £1,400-£1,800 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Provenance: Spink N.C., December 2000. King’s Commendation London Gazette 28 October 1940: ‘For services when the ship was torpedoed and sunk.’ Lloyd’s Medal for Bravery at Sea Lloyd’s List and Shipping Gazette 13 May 1941: ‘The Master, First, Second and Fourth Officers, after having done all they could to save life and having no boat or raft to save themselves, took to the water as the vessel sank, and all, with the exception of the Chief Officer [Brown], were drowned.’ Frederick Bertram Brown was likely serving in the Arandora Star at the outbreak of hostilities. A cruise ship of the Blue Star Line, she was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted for use as troopship, and it was in this capacity that she participated in the evacuation of military and civilian personnel from Norway and France in April-June 1940. In the following month, on 2 July 1940, the Arandora Star was torpedoed and sunk by the U-47 about 75 miles west of Bloody Foreland in Co. Donegal. Hocking’s A Dictionary of Disasters at Sea states: ‘The liner was under the command of Captain Moulton and carried 1,178 German and Italian internees proceeding to Canada, the remainder consisting of 176 crew and 254 troops charged with the duty of guarding the prisoners. Immediately the torpedo exploded there was panic among the Germans and Italians, who fought each other with ferocious savagery. In attempting to rush the boats scores were forced overboard and drowned …’ Sergeant Norman Price, a survivor, later recalled: ‘I could see hundreds of men clinging to the ship. They were like ants and then the ship went up at one end and slid rapidly down, taking the men with her … Many men had broken their necks jumping or diving into the water. Others injured themselves by landing on drifting wreckage and floating debris near the sinking ship … ’ And in respect of Frederick Brown’s gallant deeds, Those in Peril on the Seas, by David Masters, adds: ‘She was so badly shattered by the explosion that the passengers had only a poor chance. Captain Moulton, the Chief Officer, F. B. Brown, the Second Officer, S. Ransom and the Fourth Officer, R. Liddle, strove without the slightest thought of self to get the people into the boats. They were indefatigable in their efforts, but the ship was foundering swiftly and they had little time. Yet in the short time vouchsafed to them they launched every boat and raft on the liner. There was nothing left for them, no boat or raft to ensure their own safety. As the ship went down they jumped into the sea, four of the bravest men who ever trod a deck. Captain E. W. Moulton, Second Officer Stanley Ransom and Fourth Officer Ralph Liddle all sacrificed their lives for their fellow men and the courage of all four won the award of the Lloyd’s Medal.’ The final death toll amounted to 613 internees, 91 soldiers and 57 crew. Sold with a pre-war copy of the Arandora Star’s cruise guidebook.

Pilgrim's Guidebook to Rome.- Serrano (Marco Attilio) De Septem Urbis Romanae Ecclesiis., printer's woodcut device to title, and early ink ownership inscriptions, ink in later land to front endpaper recto, lacking final leaf (M2 ?blank), [VD16 S 6060] Cologne, Arnold Birckmann (heirs of) and Arnold Mylius, 1600, bound with Cuyk (Hendrik van) Liturgicae Precationes..., woodcut device to title, woodcut initials and two figurative tail-pieces, text within ruled borders, Leuven, Joannes Masius, 1605, together 2 works in 1, contemporary limp vellum, with central gilt abbatial or episcopal arms to cover, featuring a shield with crossed-keys of St. Peter over an upward pointing sword with mitre above and all encircled by a foliate wreath, small 8vo. *** The contrasting genre of these two works, evokes the dual persona of the volume's owner - presumably a northern European Catholic prelate - as both pilgrim and theologian. The pilgrim's guide to the Seven Pilgrims Churches of Rome (their respective relics, stations and indulgences) was clearly published in conjunction with the Jubilee Year of 1600 for German pilgrims planning to visit the Holy City from Cologne. The second work discusses precautions to ensure correct celebration of the Mass and against heretical practice (the title woodcut juxtaposes a Catholic priest celebrating Mass at the moment of transubstantiation and Protestants joining at the eucharistic communion table): USTC lists only one copy of this work in the UK (Bodleian, Oxford).

Initiated by William Cornwallis Cartwright, M. P. (1825-1915), who acquired select ceramics and glass primarily from Bluett's between 1910 and 1913, the collection expanded under the stewardship of his son, Sir Fairfax Leighton Cartwright, GCMG, GCVO (1857-1928). Concurrently, Richard Fairfax William Cartwright (1903-1954), grandson of William, embarked on his own acquisitions starting in 1933, amassing a collection of around 400 monochrome porcelains by his untimely death in 1954. These treasures adorned a specially curated room at Aynhoe Park, hailed in the post-World War II guidebook as 'one of the glories of Aynhoe.'Following the sale of Aynhoe Park circa 1960, Roger Bluett facilitated the relocation of the collection to the Cartwright family's manor house near Bath in the mid-1970s, which belonged to R.F.W. This transition likely prompted the sale of a select few duplicates through Bluetts, initially showcased at the Antique Dealers' Fair held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in June 1975.Superbly potted and enamelled, the present bowls exemplify the Yongzheng Emperor's appreciation for understated yet superbly executed pieces of the highest calibre. Bowls displaying hemispherical shapes and decorated with monochrome enamels appear to be innovations of the Yongzheng period, likely influenced by the visionary work of Tang Ying (1682-1756). In his tenure as superintendent of the Imperial kilns, Ying was renowned for creating tactically engaging and pioneering porcelain wares. Achieving perfection in every stage of production was imperative due to the exacting precision required.Lime-green enamel was a rarity during the Yongzheng period and monochrome vessels decorated in this colour, with their seemingly straightforward design and single palette, actually represent some of the most technically demanding porcelains that were ever created. Despite the abundant availability of lead-antimonate in China, the addition of copper to lead-antimonate to create the lime-green enamel, as seen on the present bowls, was not used until Jesuit missionaries directly influenced the production of arts and crafts. The attractive green colour was notable not only for its scarcity but also for the remarkable evenness of its application. Achieving a good level of consistency would have necessitated a second firing at a lower temperature, a challenging process to execute satisfactorily, as demonstrated by the current bowls. Compare with three similar green-enamelled bowls, Yongzheng marks and period, in the British Museum, London, the first illustrated by M.Medley, Illustrated Catalogue of Ming and Ch'ing Monochrome in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, 1973, cat.no.B526; the other two bowls illustrated by R.Scott, Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, 1989, pl.97. Although the cover and reverse side are purely CLR (including the CLR's own line map), the map itself is the standard Underground Group map of the time and this had clearly been offered to non-members of the group (the CLR was finally absorbed into the Group in 1913) in an effort to portray a unified network. An unusually good example of this rather scarce map, some extra fold creases suggest that it may have originally been inside a guidebook. [1]
1919 London Underground MAP OF THE ELECTRIC RAILWAYS OF LONDON 'What to See & How to Travel' with print-code 395-500M-2-10-19. A very good example with just a very small parting at one fold-corner and traces of adhesive down the outside spine where it was originally tipped into a guidebook. [1]

1923 London Underground POCKET MAP of the Electric Railways of London "What to see and how to travel". Designed by MacDonald Gill with his distinctive style of calligraphy and map border, this is the less-common issue dated 1/11/23 and shows the British Empire Exhibition stations with red dots. A very good example in all respects other than a little edge-scuffing in one place and a light trace of adhesive at the spine when folded from where it was probably once tipped into a guidebook. [1]
