*Grayson Perry RA (b.1960) 'ALIEN BABY' Glazed ceramic, stamped and numbered to the reverse '9', from a series of 12, executed 2018 27 x 17cm 'Alien Baby' was created during his time making the BAFTA nominated 'Rites of Passage', a four episode series exploring the topics of Death, Marriage, Birth and Coming of Age. Perry travelled the world exploring rituals across different cultures before returning home to England, to discuss his findings with British families, drawing parallels with seminal moments in their own lives and helping to devise secular rituals to help them make sense of the landmark moments they were experiencing. Episode three, Birth, followed Essex-based couple Abbie and Laura and their sons Caspar and Ezra who, after being born at 26 weeks, were cared for over 100 days by the neonatal care team at Chelmsford’s Broomfield Hospital. During his visit to the unit the artist noticed the serene calm of the ward, noting the secure environment felt itself ‘like floating around in amniotic fluid.’ He described witnessing the slow motion modern miracle that sees the babies being nurtured into the world by the dedicated team of nurses who help them survive and thrive against all odds. He sees the nurses as the crew of a spaceship, employing modern technology with a sympathetic touch, the twinkling lights of the monitors reminiscent of the light-up controls of the flight deck of a spaceship. ‘It feels otherworldly like we are on board a spaceship drifting through inner space on our way to the time when they [the babies] should have come’. Inspired by this cosmic scene and believing there to be a need for the NHS to be ritualised as one of the pillars of modern society, Grayson produced a range of 12 'Alien Babies', each a celebration of the NHS, the technology and, above all, the humanity of the neonatal nurses. The works, each unique and executed in pottery with a metallic gilt glaze, were gifted by the artist to every member of the neonatal team at the Broomfield, as well as to the couples featured in the show. He states ‘each sculpture represents the spirit of all the little lives bought into the earth by the nursing team’. It seems only fitting that this sculpture comes to auction to help finance the IVF treatment that will enable Abbie and Laura to continue to grow their family. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.

Jonathan Yeo Cara Study I, 2016 Archival Pigment Print With Hand Finished Varnish On Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultrasmooth Paper With Torn Edges. From the edition of 50 42 x 42cm (16½ x 16½ in.) Similar works by this artist retail at: £2,220 Jonathan Yeo: Jonathan Yeo (b. London, 18 December 1970) is one of the world’s leading figurative artists. He has painted and worked with iconic and celebrated figures including Sir David Attenborough, peace activist Malala Yousafzai, actors Dennis Hopper, Nicole Kidman and Idris Elba, artists Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry, supermodel and actor Cara Delevingne, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and has produced official commissions of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall which now hangs at Clarence House and within the Royal Collection. His work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries around the world and has been the subject of several major mid-career retrospectives in the UK and internationally. Entirely self-taught, Yeo rose to prominence as a figurative painter by the age of thirty following several major official commissions, such as that of the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, at a time when painting generally, and portraiture in particular, had fallen out of fashion. His collage of George Bush in 2007, however, earned his reputation as someone known for both traditional and experimental portraiture. Along with his Collage Series, Yeo has explored more conceptual themes in his series of paintings looking at cosmetic surgery and increasingly his portraits are addressing wider concepts and themes within the paintings’ narrative. His 2013 first mid-career retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery in London was acclaimed by the critics and public alike, and was accompanied by a major monograph and a BBC1 Culture Show special. The exhibition then toured in 2014 to the Lowry in Salford and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. In 2016 he collaborated with Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, where he unveiled a portrait of Kevin Spacey in his role as President Underwood, from the Netflix series House of Cards. Later that year he had his largest retrospective to date at The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg, in Denmark. In early 2016 Yeo began experimenting with 3-D printing and scanning in order to make self-portraits and has also been working with various tech companies to help develop ground-breaking virtual reality drawing software. In December 2017 he unveiled his first ever large-scale sculptural work, made using an innovative combination of these new processes at London's Royal Academy of Arts. The first ever institutional solo show of Yeo's Surgery Series opened early 2018 at the Bowes Museum in County Durham. Yeo has emerged as one of the foremost pioneers of figurative painting in Britain. His career as a painter has seen him confront a multitude of different narratives and themes. Content ranges from how we consume and discuss imagery, the modern day obsession of social media, actor’s in character, the pervasiveness of pornography, cosmetic surgery and societal portraiture. The appropriate personality to use as subject is decisive and Yeo uses them as a vehicle to explore the study of physiognomy, whilst simultaneously tackling often complex narratives and ongoing themes. Mette Skougaard, Director, Museum of National History, Denmark, said Yeo is “a pivotal force in the revitalisation of figurative art in general and in the art of portraiture in particular.

A unique collection of autographs and artwork by celebrities and notable figures including pop stars, artists, sports personalities, actors, authors, comedians, designers. The collection was put together by the late Karen Gammon and began life as her contribution to a Millennium Art Exhibition designed to raise money for a number of different charities (nominated by the celebrities). Karen sent a button to each celebrity and asked them to design a piece of art around it. Many of the designs are appropriate for the figure in question and represent the very thing they are famous for. The collection includes: J. K. Rowling (who has sketched three silhouettes flying around her button on broomsticks, one clearly being Harry Potter wearing a scarf); Mary Fedden RA (who has sketched a cat holding her button in a flower); Sir Paul McCartney (who has produced a humorous cartoon with the button as a nose); Dame Elizabeth Blackadder RA (who has used her buttons in a vibrant watercolour drawing of a lizard); Sir Stirling Moss (who has turned his button into a steering wheel); Grayson Perry RA (who has turned his buttons into figures being hanged); Mary Quant (who has incorporated her button into a sketch of a dress); Antony Gormley RA (who has drawn a tiny figure holding up his button); Lord Lichfield (self-portrait taking a photograph with the button as his camera); Nick Park (who has drawn a cartoon of Gromit with the button as his nose); Ronnie Barker (who has used his padlock button in a gag about his wife's handbag); Anthony Green RA (who has incorporated his button into a self-portrait); Phil Collins (who has turned his button into a drum kit); Sir Nicholas Serota (who has depicted his button on a Tate Modern plinth); Dick Francis (who has drawn a horse & jockey jumping over his button); Sir David Jason (who has doodled a wall with 'Del Boy woz 'ere'). The collection, which has been framed, comes with separate paperwork and consent forms relating to the acquisition of the autographs (often signed again), and even press/publicity photographs (many of which are again signed), together with numerous copies of a book that was produced to illustrate and explain the collection, 'Celebrity Button Art - An A to Z of Celebrity Mini Masterpieces', 2010 (with foreword by Bonnie Tyler). In her introduction, Karen states, 'Why art around a button you may ask? I needed a common starting point yet something that would inspire the creation of a mini masterpiece without directing or inhibiting the artist too much. I needed something that was seemingly insignificant by itself but would become an integral part of an imaginative spark of inspiration.' Grayson Perry CBE RA (b.1960). Joker. Digital signed print, numbered 1/1. On Giclée Hahnemühle Pearl paper. 59.4 x 41cm. Framed. Grayson Perry is an English contemporary artist. He is known for his ceramic vases, tapestries and cross-dressing, as well as his observations of the contemporary arts scene, and for dissecting British prejudices, fashions and foibles. Perry's vases have classical forms and are decorated in bright colours, depicting subjects at odds with their attractive appearance. There is a strong autobiographical element in his work, in which images of Perry as Claire, his female alter-ego, and Alan Measles, his childhood teddy bear, often appear. Perry has had solo exhibitions at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, at the Barbican Centre, the British Museum and Serpentine Gallery in London, at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan. His work is held in the permanent collections of the British Council and Arts Council, Crafts Council, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Tate and Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 2003. In 2008 he was ranked number 32 in The Daily Telegraph's list of the 100 most powerful people in British culture. In 2012, Perry was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork-the Beatles' Sgt. Holly Frean. 5 of Hearts. Monotype print. 18 x 11cm. Framed. Holly Frean: Holly Frean is an artist of exceptional dedication and vision. She began her formal training as an architect and draughtsman but painting portraits took over. Her studio practice has since grown to include picture-making in all its forms, typically oil paintings on canvas and gouaches on paper, also printmaking and 3D work. Infused with wit and humour, Holly’s work draws on the lives of artists and uniquely documents the subtleties in a face, body or movement. Over the past decade she has evolved a highly personal and technically accomplished style. Holly’s work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and America. She has won numerous accolades including the 2012 National Open Art Competition Painting Prize (awarded by Grayson Perry) and regularly shows at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the ING Discerning Eye at Mall Galleries in London. Commissions include those from the Duchess of Northumberland, designer Betty Jackson, comedians Russell Howard and Ricky Gervais, hotelier Kit Kemp, actor Russell Tovey and retailer Johnny Boden. Holly's imagination and versatility have recently led to coveted textile, ceramic and wallpaper collaborations with Anthropologie, Burberry, Andrew Martin and Paul Smith. www.hollyfrean.comPlease note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Grayson Perry CBE RA (b.1960). Joker. Digital signed print on Canson Infinity Rag Photographique paper, marked AP1 and signed to margin 59.4 x 42cm. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover-to celebrate the British cultural figures of his life.
