Marcelina Amelia Grounding Watercolour and Acrylic on Paper Signed on Verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About Marcelina Amelia is a contemporary artist, based between the UK and Poland, working with mixed media approaches to print, painting and drawing. She often draws inspirations from her Polish heritage, looking to religious iconography and folk tales, as well as childhood memories, the power of dreams, spirituality, sexuality, and the human condition. According to her Mum, Marcelina started drawing before she could properly speak. She has been featured in publications including Booooooom, Bomb, Art Maze, Create Magazine, Digital Arts, Vogue, Refinery29, The NY Times, Der Spiegel and Ballad Of Magazine and is also a founder of art-brand Mesh Studio. She exhibits work throughout the UK as well as internationally and was a featured artist at the 2017 edition of the London Illustration Fair and led The Big Draw sketch walk for Apple. In 2018 Marcelina was Saatchi Art's featured 'Artist in Spotlight' at The Other Art Fair in Bristol and her artwork adorned thousands of tote bags promoting the fair. This year Marcelina was also a featured artist at the Affordable Art Fair Battersea's Live Art event. Added to that her work was displayed at Boxpark Croydon, made an appearance at 2018 London Fashion Week and she has been invited to take part in the infamous 'Art on a Postcard' secret auction alongside some big names in the art world. Rebecca Wilson, the chief curator at Saatchi Art, highlighted Marcelina as an artist to invest in at her talk at The Other Art Fair in London in 2018. In addition, Saatchi curator Monty Preston said she was "unquestionably an artist on the rise" Marcelina says, 'I like to play at the tense borders between lust and innocence; joy and sadness; fun and pain. My interest in juxtaposition comes from my origins and fascination with East European culture which was eloquently described by Grayson Perry as 'nowhere else could such horrific grief be met with such fairly-tale romanticism'. I tend to utilise nature as a metaphor for everyday feelings and headaches. My recent work also dwells into themes of self acceptance, body positivity, representations of the female sexuality, gender, migration, and society. Although some of the subjects I take on are often quite dark I like to think that there is some humour and light in my finished artwork.'

EMMY BRIDGWATER (1906-1999)The kill signed 'Emmy Bridgwater' (lower left)oil on board35.6 x 45.7cm (14 x 18in).Painted in 1942Footnotes:ProvenancePeter Nahum Collection.Private collection, UK.ExhibitedMilan, Palazzo Reale, I Surrealisti, May - September 1989.Frankfurt, Schirn Kunsthalle, Die Surrealisten, November 1989 - February 1990.Aldeburgh, Peter Pears Gallery, Festival Exhibition, June 2006, no. 33.Please note that there is a portrait painting on the reverse.British Surrealism from the Paul Conran Collection. On the 11th of June 1936, 1150 persons crowded into London's New Burlington Galleries to see André Breton open the first International Surrealist Exhibition. As he did, Breton announced that a revolution between perception and representation was taking place. The exhibition itself comprised of an array of continental and British names and played host to a raucous series of events. It saw Dalí famously don a deep-sea diving suit only narrowly avoiding asphyxiation, Dylan Thomas serve teacups of boiled string and Paul Nash remove a herring that had been attached to a Miró object on account of its smell. The exhibition was open for just a month, yet a staggering 23,000 visitors attended, confirming that an intrigue in Breton's 'revolution' had firmly permeated British shores. The legacy of this famous exhibition, and the associated movement, has at times overlooked the breadth of the British artists who were included. Favour has been focused on the continental contributors and the few larger domestic figures such as Moore and Nash. Yet several artists such as Grace Pailthorpe and Reuben Mednikoff (both 1936 exhibitors) and the associated British Surrealist Group members such as Ithell Colquhoun, Emmy Bridgwater and Conroy Maddox, have been championed by a dogged few.One such champion has been Paul Conran. In the early 1970s, with the aid of Roland Penrose, Conran set about forging connections with the then statesmen generation of British surrealist artists. Picking out names from the phonebook he arranged studio visits with Eileen Agar, Ithell Colquhoun, John Melville and Edith Rimmington (whose iconic Oneiroscpist was the first picture Conran ever bought). Often buying directly from artists Conran loaned works extensively and staged a number of exhibitions including Surrealism at David Ellis Jones in 1975. Conran, along with Andrew Murray at the Mayor Gallery, and the dealer James Birch was one of a small number of advocates who shared enthusiasm for the full range of British artists associated with the movement. In the late 80s in partnership with Birch, Conran opened a gallery in Soho and there exhibited British surrealism in depth (they also gave Grayson Perry four of his earliest exhibitions). The following seven works all hail from Conran's private collection. They include Conroy Maddox's equally disconcerting and amusing readymade Onanistic Typewriter (editioned by Maddox at Conran's suggestion), early 1930s oils by Pailthorpe and Mednikoff and rarities such as Emmy Bridgwater's The Kill. The concise group illustrates the scope of surrealist works produced in Britain in the 20th Century, which as a number of recent exhibitions indicate, including the acclaimed Dulwich Picture Gallery survey British Surrealism and the touring Pailthorpe and Mednikoff exhibition, A Tale of Mother's Bones (which Conran in part instigated), is an area ripe for re-consideration.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Richard Ansett (British, born 1966)BIRTH, 2018 lightbox128 x 102.5cm (50 3/8 x 40 3/8in).UniqueFootnotes:ExhibitedLondon, Fitzrovia Chapel, 25-30 January 2019London, Somerset House, Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition, 2019Richard Ansett is a renowned photographer and long-time collaborator of Grayson Perry. BIRTH depicts Grayson Perry dressed as his alter ego, Claire, posed in a contemporary reworking of the mother and child motif. Both iconic and iconoclastic, Claire holds an infant in her arms, lit softly from behind and surrounded by flowers and pale pink drapery. Posed as a traditional icon might, with gaze averted into the distance, we are invited to compare this image with one of the most universally recognisable subjects in art and religious history. Originally unveiled by Grayson Perry himself at the Fitzrovia Chapel in London in January 2019, the lightbox was displayed on an altar, illuminating the secular, baroque chapel. Richard Ansett commented on this work: 'Claire is not a natural mother. This is a trans-immaculate conception', going on to comment that: 'The work balances centuries of art history and religious symbolism with a high-camp photographic parody and is a vulgar appropriation for the 21st Century that challenges the archaic boundaries of the heteronormative state that oppresses everyone.'Ansett met Perry for the first time in 2013 at the Tate Modern, Starr Auditorium, while photographing him for the BBC Reith lectures. He has since worked with Perry every year following this for Channel 4, photographing him to promote Perry's documentaries of contemporary British life.BIRTH was awarded First Prize for a Single Portrait in the Sony World Photography Awards in 2019.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

*Grayson Perry RA (b.1960) 'Alien Baby'glazed ceramic, 2018, stamped and numbered '2' verso, from an edition of 1217cm wide27cm highGrayson Perry created 'Alien Baby' during the filming of the BAFTA nominated series, 'Rites of Passage' (2018). In the third episode, Grayson explored ‘Birth’ and filmed the Neonatal Unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, speaking with mothers who had given birth to premature babies and to the nurses working with them.Drawing on his experiences in the series, Perry created twelve ‘Alien Babies’ as a way to ritualise and celebrate the NHS, technology and the humanity of the neonatal nurses. These works, each unique and executed in pottery with a metallic gilt glaze, were gifted by the artist to each nurse and to the couples featured in the show. This particular sculpture was given to one of the couples on the show; their twins were born at 29 weeks and spent nearly three months in the Special Care Baby Unit. Meeting with Grayson was a positive experience for the couple, who were grateful to him for allowing them the opportunity to say a proper thank-you to the nurses and staff at Broomfield Hospital who had nurtured their twins through such a difficult period.Inspired by the flickering lights and modern technology of the neonatal ward, Grayson drew on cosmic imagery to create ‘Alien Baby’. The ‘Alien Baby’ itself weighs approximately 2 pounds, the same as the premature babies filmed in this series just after they were born.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
