Tadellos in der Erhaltung, elektrifiziert mit aufgelegten schwarzen KabelnErläuterungenAls zweites Kind in der Künstlerfamilie von Giovanni Giacometti im Bergell aufgewachsen, stand Diego Giacometti lange im Schatten seines Vaters und seines älteren Bruders Alberto, der sich bereits in den 1920er Jahren in Paris einen Namen als Künstler gemacht hatte. Nach seiner Schulzeit begann Diego eine kaufmännische Ausbildung, folgte aber im Februar 1925 seinem Bruder nach Paris. Als Alberto durch Vermittlung von Man Ray 1929 den Innenarchitekten und Möbeldesigner Jean-Michel Frank kennenlernte und sich fortan auch mit der Gestaltung von Einrichtungsgegenständen befasste, fand Diego endlich seine Berufung, indem er seinen Bruder bei der Umsetzung und Herstellung dieser "Designobjekte" unterstützte. Alberto vertraute seinem Bruder später sogar den gesamten Herstellungsprozess an.Als Diego im Jahr 1935 längere Zeit in seinem Heimatort Stampa im Bergell weilte, begann er erste Tierplastiken umzusetzen. Zurück in Paris, besuchte er Kurse an der dortigen "Académie Scandinave". Ab 1939 schuf er grössere skulpturale Werke und ab 1950 konzentrierte er sich auf Möbel und Objekte. Diego modellierte seine Werke in Gips und goss sie später in Bronze. Besonders war, dass er viele seiner Werke meistens nicht in einem Stück goss, sondern einzelne Teile goss und sie später zu einem Ganzen komponierte und verschweisste. Somit sind alle Arbeiten, auch wenn sie als "Serie" hergestellt wurden, immer minim anders. Nicht zuletzt deshalb wurde Diego bald zu einem Lieblingsgestalter der Pariser Oberschicht.Er entwickelte auch zahlreiche Auftragsarbeiten, darunter der hier angebotene Leuchter, den Eberhard W. Kornfeld 1962 zuerst für sein Ferienhaus im Wallis eigens herstellen liess. Später bestellte er einen zweiten, identischen Leuchter. Wohl in Zusammenhang mit dieser zweiten Bestellung stellte Diego, ohne Wissen von Kornfeld, eine dritte Version mit leicht modifizierter Aufhängung für den brasilianischen Unternehmer Francisco (Baby) Matarazzo Pignatari her. Neben dem grossen Leuchter entstand eine kleinere Version, bei der das Akrobatenpaar auf einer Art Trapez unter einer Glühbirne angeordnet war. Der hier angebotene Leuchter stammt direkt aus dem Atelier von Diego und verblieb bis zum Tod von Eberhard W. Folgerichtig entstand unmittelbar nach den noch in Kalifornien geschaffenen "Bodyshells" und "Wrappings" Buchers Hauptwerk, die "Raumhäutungen". Die wichtigste Arbeit aus dieser Gruppe ist sicherlich die Häutung "Herrenzimmer" (1977-1979): Bucher goss die Wandtäfelungen, Schränke und den Parkettboden des Herrenzimmers ihres gutbürgerlichen Elternhauses in Wülflingen im Kanton Zürich mit Latex auf Stoff ab. Dazu verwendete sie mit Latex bedeckte und mit Perlmutt bemalte Gazeblättchen. War der Latex fest, wurden die Oberflächen in einem mühsamen Prozess "gehäutet". Bucher selbst sagte dazu: "Das Lebende, die Vergangenheit, verheddert sich in dem Tuch und bleibt dort fixiert. Langsam lockern wir die Gummischichten, die Haut, und ziehen das Gestern ins Heute". Die transluzenten Latexhäute ergeben geheimnisvolle Objekte. Das hier angebotene Ensemble wurde in einen von der Künstlerin konzipierten, schwarz bespannten Kastenrahmen gehängt. Vermutlich handelt es sich um drei Häutungen des Parkettbodens im Herrenzimmer in Wülflingen, die fast sakral von innen heraus zu leuchten scheinen.
