Beuys verband, indem er den Handschuh durch seine Signatur selbst zum Kunstwerk bestimmte, mehrere Dominanten seiner Kunst: sein erweiterter Kunstbegriff, Gold als Mythos und den Hasen als mythisches Ursymbol. Tiere, insbesondere der Hase, waren seit Anbeginn zentrale Motive im Oeuvre von Beuys. 1941 studierte er während seiner Ausbildung zum Bordfunker zusammen mit dem befreundeten, vorgesetzten Tierfilmer Heinz Sielmann Zoologie in Posen. 1947 - 1953 studierte der anthroposophisch beeinflusste Beuys an der Akademie in Düsseldorf bei Ewald Mataré, für den Tiere ein Hauptsujet waren, ab 1951 als dessen Meisterschüler. Zugleich wirkte Beuys 1947 - 1949 an Tierfilmen von Heinz Sielmann mit. Das Tier steht im Werk von Beuys für das Ursprüngliche, Energie und Instinkt. Mit kaum einer Tierart identifizierte sich Beuys so sehr wie mit dem Hasen, so dass er selbst sagte: "ich bin kein Mensch, ich bin ein Hase". 1965 realisierte Beuys die spektakuläre Kunstaktion "Wie man dem toten Hasen die Bilder erklärt". Danach kehrt das Hasenmotiv immer wieder. Die Symbolhaftigkeit des Goldes und die vielschichtige Symbolik des Hasen brachte er erstmals 1982 in der Aktion "Goldhase" während der documenta VII näher zusammen. Beuys schmolz eine Kopie der goldenen Zarenkrone Iwans des Schrecklichen ein und goss hieraus einen "Friedenshasen" mit Sonnenkugel. Sein paralleles "7000-Eichen"-Projekt für die documenta wurde teilfinanziert durch das Multiple "Hasensteine" - Basaltstelen (wie sie in Kassel neben den Eichen positioniert wurden) bekamen mit einer Schablone einen goldenen Hasen im Stil archaischer Höhlenmalereien aufgesprüht.
