Triassic Period, 250-200 million years BP. A complete fossil Keichousaurus hui from Xingyi, Guizhou, China on matrix. 717 grams, 27.5cm (10 3/4"). From an old Bristol paleontological collection; acquired 1950s-1960s. Keichousaurus was a late-Triassic marine reptile, and a member of the Pleurosaur family, which went extinct 250 million years ago during the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event. They were specialised fish eaters, and were highly unusual amongst marine reptiles in that they gave birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Fine condition.

Lower Cretaceous Period, 120 million years BP. A complete Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis (also known as Hyphalosaurus lingyuanensis) from the Yixian Formation, Lingyuan, Liaoning Province in Northeast China, in a display case. 63 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). From a Lincoln paleontological collection. Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis is a more recently discovered and described (Li Jianjun, 1999, Beijing Natural History Museum) marine lizard from the famous dinosaur fossil beds of Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China. Believed to have descended from a land-dwelling ancestor, Sinohydrosaurus was a freshwater aquatic reptile. Fine condition.
3rd millennium BC. Group of carved stone cylinder seals, all with original typed and signed scholarly notes by the late W. G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993 and accompanied by museum quality impressions comprising: Mesopotamian (3), with notes: 'Cylinder seal of white marble, 32 x 19mm. Two registers: above frieze of animals, below more but different animals. Rare design, but seal worn. Mesopotamia or West Iran, c. 2400-2200 B.C.'; 'Cylinder seal of fossil shell, 34 x 20mm. A contest scene of one lion, two bulls with human faces, and four rescuing heroes. Mesopotamia c. 2400-2200 B.C. Worn.' and 'Cylinder seal of fawn stone, 32 x 17mm. A contest scene: two lions savaging two differentiated horned animals, with parts of other such animals as fillers. Mesopotamian, c.2400-2200 B.C. Condition good.' with another: 'Cylinder seal of white marble, 32 x 25mm. Group of standing figures. Syria or West Iran, c. 2500-2000 B.C. worn and some recutting.'. 100 grams total, 32-34mm (1 1/4"). From a private collection of seals and amulets, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s; inventory numbers 149,150,151 & 153. Astronomer & Soldier.- Peyton (John East Hunter, owner of Wakehurst Place, married Sophia Henriette Lindsay, son of John Joseph Wakehurst Peyton, 1841-1916) Notes [&] Diary, autograph manuscript, ephemera (including an photograph of the eclipse of the Sun at Cotina, Italy in 1905) and newspaper cuttings, some ephemera loosely inserted, together c. 250pp., numerous pp. loose, signed by Peyton and with his bookplate on front pastedown, original roan-backed boards, rubbed, corners worn, covers detached, lacks spine, sm. 4to, 1861-1916. ⁂ Peyton was a typical Victorian man of many pastimes, including an interest in geology and astronomy. After leaving the army in 1863, Peyton embarked on several projects including: joining the Royal Victoria Yacht Club; auction of Wakehurst Place; elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1870; climbing the Jungfrau with the famous guide Peter Eggar in 1875; boring in the Sussex Weald for fossils, and taking a balloon ride in 1879, "1300 feet, lovely view of Paris"; climbed Mont Blanc; sailed in the SS Garonne to Norway with Sir Norman Lockyer to photograph an eclipse of the Sun. In 1874 he discovered a new fossil crustacea, named Mecocheirus Peytoni by Sir Arthur Smith Woodward (1864-1944), palaeontologist, at the Geological Society's meeting, 1875. Peyton also records many of the main events of the day such as the death of General Gordon, the Boer War, death of Queen Victoria, assassination of President McKinley, Russian Navy firing on British trawlers in the North Sea [Dogger bank incident], Peary at the North Pole, Bleriot flying across the Channel, Amundsen at the South Pole, death of Captain Scott etc.
