Described as a Santee/Sioux Drum Cover. Lent by C. F. Taylor Collection, Hastings. These shelf valences were used in trappers' cabins or traders' houses and made in the style similar to the drum covers of earlier times. It has been suggested that the cut steel work along the top could represent stars or a map of hunting sites and trails. Battleford is a small town in Saskatchewan close to the Alberta border.

One sconce missing. Some spraining to branches. Extensive loss to gilding. Some surface wear and scratching throughout.

A Victorian Silver Mustard-Pot, by John and Henry Lias, London, 1840, drum-shaped and with a foliage cast border, the hinged slightly domed cover with shell thumbpiece, with blue glass liner, with an associated Fiddle Thread pattern mustard-spoon, 7cm high, weight of silver 4oz 4dwt (2) . Fully marked near rim and part marked inside cover. The marks have some wear but are generally legible. The spoons is marked for London, 1820. There is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points and to the engraved crest on the spoon. The interior is gilded and the blue glass liner is probably later.
