Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother to her jockey David Mould, hallmarked J W Benson Ltd, Birmingham, 1966, blue, red & gold enamelled ER monogram & crown, in original fitted red leather Cartier retailer`s case, with similar tooled gilt monogram to the lid. David Mould was a leading National Hunt jockey who rode a career total of 606 winners between 1958 and 1975. 106 of these winners were in the famous, buff and black colours of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, making him Her Majesty`s most successful jockey. David Mould was stable jockey to Peter Cazalet at Fairlawne, a grand country house near Tombridge in Kent, from where 250 royal winners were sent out between 1949 and 1973. Famously, David Mould would wear a new pair of breeches and boots on every occasion he rode one of the Queen Mother`s horses. He was originally apprenticed to John Sutcliffe at Epsom but moved to Peter Cazalet when he became too heavy to ride on the Flat. He believes that the Queen Mother was responsible for saving his right leg, which had become gangrenous following a horrific injury sustained in race riding. On hearing the news she sent her personal surgeon, Sir Henry Osmond-Clarke, whose operation successfully saved the leg and allowed Mould to resume his career in the saddle. In 1969 David Mould married horsewoman Marion Coakes, who won a silver medal on her famous horse Strolled at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico as well as many other notable equestrian events.
