A RARE DANISH OFFICER'S PALLASCH, CIRCA 1720-30 with broad heavy double-edged blade of flattened-hexagonal section (the upper third missing), etched and gilt with hounds in pursuit of hares amidst scrolls within a central fuller on each face, the dogs and hares interspersed with pierced rondels filled with an alternating arrangement of six coral and six turquoise beads, and enriched with further scrolls on a gilt panel on each face at the forte, brass hilt cast and chased in low relief, comprising straight quillon with monsterhead finial, frontal guard decorated with the seated figure of victory on an elaborate trophy-of-arms and joined to the knuckle-guard by two curved bars with monsterhead finials, knuckle-guard en suite, thumb-loop and pommel each decorated with a further trophy-of-arms, fishskin-covered grip studded with three clam-shell rivets at the front, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard (missing the corresponding portion) with locket en suite with the hilt, the locket and hilt retaining some original gilding 62.7 cm; 24 ¾ in blade This sword is based on the gold-hilted sword of King Frederick IV (1671-1730), preserved in Rosenborg Slot (cat. no. 40). The Rosenborg catalogue states that in 1726-27 the Danish Mounted Life Regiment, Livregiment til Hest, was issued with 539 broadswords with brass hilts decorated with the cypher of King Frederick IV. While the corresponding officer's sword is not known it was probably based on the gold-hilted Royal sword mentioned above. See Hoff et al,1956, pp. 68-69. Another, formerly in the Warwick Castle Armoury (Inv. No. E015), was sold in these rooms, lot 264, 12th December 2007 and another is illustrated Southwick 1982, p.137, no. 366.
