VADYM PYVOVAR: A BOXWOOD NETSUKE OF A FREEZING KARASU TENGUBy Vadym Pyvovar, signed with the artist's initialsUkraine, 2023A fine wood netsuke described by Gabor Wilhelm as “tengu frieux” or freezing tengu, in our opinion very fittingly, as the mythical, bird-like being clutches its large wings together, standing rather stiffly, the three-clawed feet clenching together, and its expression shuddering – one imagines the cold breeze fluttering by. The karasu (crow-beaked) tengu has long finely carved hair, wears a tokin cap inlaid in lustrous black coral, the pupils inlaid with amber. The plumage well-detailed. Asymmetrical, generously excavated himotoshi through the back and one thigh incised with the artist's initials. The veins of the leaf are naturalistically carved as are its uneven edges. The umimatsu having reddish inclusion and left partly uncarved underneath, drawing the eye to the natural form of this beautiful material. Large, generously excavated and asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside.LENGTH 5 cmCondition: Minor wear, expected age cracks, natural flaws, some losses to the area around the stem.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Geneva, Switzerland, assembled since the 1960s, and thence by descent. SEIMIN: A RARE INLAID DOUBLE WALNUT (KURUMI) NETSUKEBy Seimin, signed Seimin 晴民Japan, Iwashiro, c. 1850, Edo period (1615-1868)A finely carved and attractively stained double-walnut with a design of The Queen Mother of the West, Seiobo, dressed in voluminous robes, wearing an ornate tiara, and holding a fan, a karako attendant handing her an immortality-granting peach. The carving is embellished with various stained inlays including antler, horn, mother-of-pearl, coral, and pewter. One of the himotoshi ringed in green-stained antler and signed to the back within a raised oval reserve SEIMIN.LENGTH 5 cmCondition: Good condition. Some typical losses to inlays with associated repairs. Some 'natural flaws' such as tiny pinholes and typical wear associated with kurumi netsuke.Provenance: Collection of Robert and Isabelle de Strycker, and thence by descent in the same family. Robert de Strycker (1903-1968) was a French engineer who specialized in metallurgy. He was a Stanford graduate, a professor at the University of Leuven, a director of the Institute of Metallurgy at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and one of the most influential members of the faculty of applied sciences. After World War II, he made large contributions to France's post-war recovery. Robert and his wife Isabelle (1915-2010) first encountered Asian art at the British Museum during a stay in London in the 1930s. Enamored with the style and beauty, they both decided to study and collect Japanese and Chinese works of art. In 1938, they eventually began to build their collection, buying from Belgian, Parisian, and English dealers. He loaned more than a dozen items to the Royal Academy Exhibition in London, 1935-1936. During the First World War he served with the Grenadier Guards and won a Military Cross for outstanding service. Notable for their extravagant designs and refined workmanship, the present vases display the technical innovations and unconventional aesthetics characterising porcelain vessels made during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. Porcelain vases decorated with the eye-catching designs of knotted cloths, such as the present examples, are exceedingly rare and remarkable examples of trompe l'oeil. The design was much favoured by the Qianlong Emperor who favoured porcelain wares that contained elements simulating objects in other materials. The potters active at the Imperial kilns in Jingdezhen were thus prompted to create wares that were technically innovative and unconventional in their aesthetics.The Japanese packaging tradition, known as furoshiki, strongly influenced the silky knotted cloth design on the present vases. The illusion of an object wrapped in cloth was frequently evoked in Japanese lacquer and replicated at the Palace Workshops in various media, such as painted enamels, cloisonné, glass, wood and lacquer, throughout the reigns of the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors. Both the shape and glaze of the present vessels appear to be innovations of the Yongzheng period, probably attributable to the genius of Tang Ying (1682-1756), superintendent at the Imperial kilns, who experimented with a variety of glaze compositions to make highly tactile and innovative pieces. Monochrome-glazed vessels produced during the Yongzheng reign were typically coated in lemon yellow, coral red, lime-green and rose-pink glazes. Turquoise-glazed examples, however, appeared to be rare and reserved for use by the Court, probably due to the laborious process involved in obtaining turquoise-glazed vessels, which underwent two firings: the first taking place at high temperatures, after the application of transparent and translucent glazes; the second firing, conducted at lower temperatures, was necessary after the application of the turquoise glaze, which matured in this condition.
