STANLEY LEATHER CASED ABNEY LEVEL CLINOMETER, c. 1900-1914, patinated brass, stamped 'Stanley, Great Turnstile, Holborn, London', 12cms long Comments: Consists of a small telescope eyesight and an adjustable tubular spirit level, which is connected to a semi circular protractor scale and vernier, marked in both slope and degrees up to ±60°. The Abney (hand spirit) Level or Clinometer, allows the object to be sighted and the level bubble can then be seen simultaneously, so that the index can be set accurately.
A Victorian 1895 pattern British Army Elliott Brothers of London made military clinometer instrument. Brass construction, with original spirit level. War Department stamp, with broad arrow. Housed within its original leather case marked to top ' Case - Large Clinometer Mark I - Jabez Cliff & Co, 1918 '. Maker's marks to top. Instrument measures approx; 17cm long. Such instruments continued to be used in the First World War.

An Edwardian lacquered brass clinometer by J.Hicks London, of London, engraved to the top and bottom 'W.J.Johnson', and engraved to the underside ‘No 2627, Watkins Clinometer patent 217, J.Hicks Maker 8 Hatton Garden London’, in leather case with initials (2).PROVENANCE: The Raymond Rush Collection. Mr Rush was an engineer, farmer and lay preacher who lived at Golden Cross Farm in Siddington, Cheshire. He was also a historian, broadcaster, author and speaker who regularly gave talks on local history, agricultural history and historic curios. In addition, he was also an accomplished maker of corn dollies.Additional InformationGeneral wear to the surface throughout. Case with expected rubbing and wear.

A JAPANNED AND LACQUERED BRASS INCLINOMETERE. R. Watts and Son, London, dated 1941With pierced triangular frame enclosing spirit bubble scale with spring-loaded pivot at the open end, engaging with the underside of the brass fine-screw helical drum scale divided into tenths of a degree for reading against a pointer applied to the top plate of the tall end, the scale end plate engraved CLINOMETER, LARGE, E.R. WATTS & SON, LONDON, 1941, No. 23071, in original shaped mahogany box stamped with repeat makers mark, serial number and date to lid.The box 28cm (11ins) long, 20cm (8ins) wide, 8cm (3.125ins) high. The London based firm of E.R. Watts and Son specialised in surveying instruments and was founded in 1856 by Edwin Watts. The business was incorporated in 1922 and merged with Adam Hilger to become Hilger and Watts in 1948.
