The partially printed cheque, completed in another hand, is drawn on the joint account of John Lennon and Yoko Ono Lennon at the Bankers Trust Company of New York and is made payable to Nancy Gosnell for the sum of $3000 and annotated as being a deposit payment for a portrait. Signed by Lennon in black ink, his signature only very slightly affected by the lightest of bank cancellations. Together with Yoko Ono (1933-     ) Japanese Artist, Singer & Peace Activist, the second wife of John Lennon 1969-80. D.S., Yoko Ono Lennon, being a signed cheque, n.p. (New York?), 4th August 1980. The partially printed cheque, completed in another hand, is drawn on the joint account of John Lennon and Yoko Ono Lennon at the Bankers Trust Company of New York and is made payable to B. Harris & Sons for the sum of $7526 and annotated as being a deposit payment for jewelry. Ono’s signature is a little faded although not affected by any bank cancellations. Both cheques have a few minor vertical creases, only very slightly affecting Lennon’s signature, and both are neatly mounted to blue card. An interesting and unusual pair of signed cheques, both dated in the year of Lennon’s tragic death. About VG, 2 Nancy Gonsell is an artist from Bermuda whom was commissioned by Lennon to paint a portrait of himself and his son, Sean, whilst the former Beatle was staying on the British island during the recording of his final studio album Double Fantasy in 1980. Lennon was tragically murdered just three weeks after the release of Double Fantasy and the unfortunate circumstances resulted in the album becoming a worldwide commercial success, winning the Album of the Year award at the Grammy Award ceremonies in 1981. At the conclusion of one track on the album Lennon can be heard talking, as if he were sending a message to Yoko Ono, describing the ‘lovely time’ he is having in Bermuda and adding that he is having a portrait painted of himself and Sean – the cheque included in the present lot was the deposit payment for that very portrait.

THEATRE: A good, interesting selection of A.Ls.S. etc., by various British thespians (several of them related) of the 19th century comprising Sarah Siddons (D.S., authorising a payment of £300 to Mr. Whitley, Paddington, 6th March 1809), Charles Kemble (3; the first a brief A.L.S., one page, 4to, Theatre Royal Covent Garden, 20th February 1824, to Mr. Payne [apparently the actor John Howard Payne, although the integral address leaf bearing the name of J. Hayward Esq. at Lancaster Street], sending an order for a private box; the second a longer A.L.S., one page, 4to, Park Place, St. James's, 29th May 1837, to a gentleman, advising him on the costs and procedure of obtaining a license for a dramatic production from the Lord Chamberlain; and the third an ink signature on a slim oblong 8vo piece), John Philip Kemble (A.L.S., one page, 8vo, Priory, 1st August 1817, to his mother [Sally Ward], stating, in part, 'Keep my scrawl safe for me, both this MS and the printed leaves….' and in a postscript remarking 'Pray, get rid, if you can, of that nonsense about my concern in the architecture of the theatre'), Fanny Kemble (A.L.S., two pages, 8vo, Stratford on Avon, n.d. ('Tuesday 4th'), to Theodora, stating that she will be pleased to welcome her correspondent the following week and remarking 'You must be prepared for rather uncomfortable accommodations and a very dull life…..your visit must be accepted as a positive traveller's duty to all the famous sites of Warwickshire', further commenting in a postscript 'Cambridge is lovely & Trinity which is my college loveliest…..better than Oxford…..'), Charles Kean (2; an A.L.S. in the third person, one page, 8vo, Euston Hotel, 19th October 1860, wishing 'most particularly' to see Mr. Davis to give him an order; and an autograph envelope signed, addressed in his hand to Miss. Bethell at Hackwood Park and bearing the printed address of the Gloucester Hotel at Brighton to the verso), William Macready (2; the first A.L.S., one page, small 8vo, Clarence Terrace, 15th November n.y., to Fox, inviting him and his wife to dinner; and the second A.L.S., one page, 8vo, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, 21st September 1842, to a gentleman, stating that he is awaiting the arrival of some swords (?) before remitting a cheque in payment) and Lucia Elizabeth Vestris (A.L.S., one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Monday morning') to a gentleman, asking him if he can ride with her 'if it does not rain'). Some light overall age wear, one letter neatly mounted and a few others with minor traces of former mounting, G to about VG, 11   A pencil note in an unidentified hand at the base of Charles Kemble's brief letter is of interest, the researcher observing that John Howard Payne would probably have been procuring the box for Mary Shelley.   John Howard Payne (1791-1852) American Actor, Poet and Playwright who enjoyed great success in London and, in 1823, collaborated with Charles Kemble on a play which featured the famous ballad Home, Sweet Home. At around the same time Payne became romantically infatuated with Mary Shelley (1797-1851, English Novelist of Frankenstein) and proposed marriage to her in 1826. Shelley declined the offer, saying that having been married to one genius she could only marry another. Payne remained unmarried for the rest of his life.

Orage’, continuing ‘The exact circumstances in which he joined in the effort to preserve the weekly under my management are given, you may remember, in the article I wrote for the symposium that you edited and presented to T.S.E. on his 70th birthday’ and further stating ‘Though I would not go so far as to say that T.S.E.’s offer to collaborate is what saved the N.E.W. from extinction, his moral support was invaluable from the beginning…..although the amount of his direct personal intervention in its affairs was small: and his financial contributions to its annual deficits were fairly modest, until the last years of its existence, when they were very generous indeed’. A couple of very light, small water stains only slightly affect a few words of text in Mairet’s letter, otherwise VG, 2 Neville Braybrooke (1923-2001) English Poet, Writer, Editor, Literary Critic and Publisher.

Joint Clerk of the Navy Board), William Brouncker (1620-1684, 2nd Viscount Brouncker, English Mathematician and first President of the Royal Society who also served as a Commissioner of the Royal Navy and was a friend and colleague of Pepys, featuring prominently in his Diary), Sir Richard Haddock (c.1629-1715, English Royal Naval officer), Sir Thomas Allin (1612-1685, English Admiral), Thomas Hayter (d. circa 1689, Clerk of the Acts 1673, Secretary of the Admiralty 1679 and Comptroller of the Navy 1680-82) and Sir John Ernle (1620-1697, English Politician, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1676-89). Lot 418

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. An extremely rare D.S., A Hitler, in the form of an endorsement, being a signed cheque issued by Elisabeth Graber (?), the partially printed cheque, drawn on Copley’s Bank Limited, London, and dated 7th May 1937 is completed in Graber’s hand and made payable to Adolf Hitler for the sum of ‘Two pounds sterling’. Boldly signed by Hitler in black fountain pen ink to the verso and further countersigned beneath by several officials of the Reichsbank. The cheque bears a number of official ink stamps and cancellations made by the Reichsbank in Berlin and the overseas branch of the Midland Bank in London to the recto and verso, none of which affect Hitler’s signature and only lightly affecting the text and signature of Graber. Accompanied by a small oblong 12mo slip bearing red printed text issued by the overseas branch of the Midland Bank in London for Special Collection. Some very light, extremely minor creasing and age wear, otherwise VG   On the same day that the present cheque was issued, 7th May 1937, the United Press reported that Hitler was called from his bed in the early hours to receive news of the worst disaster to German air transportation in history with the loss of the Hindenburg. The dictator was apparently stunned by the news and refused to comment formally. The world’s largest airship, the dirigible Hindenburg, had been destroyed by fire at 7.23pm on 6th May 1937 at Lakehurst Field in New Jersey. The present cheque was paid into a National Disaster Fund authorised by Hitler following the tragedy.    It is of interest to note the address of Copley’s Bank Limited at Old Jewry in London as printed at the centre of the cheque. Old Jewry is situated in the historic and financial centre of England’s capital city and, following the Norman Conquest became a ghetto populated with Jews as William the Conqueror encouraged them to settle in his new domain.    Just a few years after signing the present cheque Adolf Hitler, along with Hermann Goring, the commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe, authorised the mass air attacks and bombing offensive against Great Britain, known as The Blitz. Many buildings and streets in the area close to Old Jewry were to be seriously damaged by the bombings.    We can find no other record of a cheque bearing Hitler’s signature to be in existence and, as the Fuhrer famously did not maintain a bank account, any other possible cheque bearing his signature would also have to be in the form of an endorsement.

Edward Hodges Baily RA (1788-1867)/Marble bust of Lady Mary Spring-Rice (later Lady Aubrey de Vere)/on a circular socle, 76cm high, signed E H Baily, R A Sculp, London, 1833/Exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1834 (RA1934, 1082) Provenance: The de Vere family trust to present owner/see illustrationMarble bust of Lady Aubrey de VereAubrey de Vere was a great admirer of Edward Hodges Baily and purchased several of his works, amongst these was the present bust (the bust was referred to in Riddel's archive on Baily). There is correspondence from de Vere's son, Sir Stephen de Vere (1812 - 1904) dated 1883 in which he discussed his father's Mother and Child group, then still in the family collection he says "My Father had the greatest admiration for Mr Baily's genius as an artist and the most profound respect and esteem for him personally. I can remember him as a guest at my Father's house in London in 1821". Referring to the present bust he says "I have found in my late Father's accounts an entry of a cheque to EBH in September 1834 which must be for the bust of Lady de Vere", (see the Baily papers f. 96).Lady Mary Spring-Rice (later Lady Aubrey de Vere):Mary Rice was born c.1787, the daughter of Stephen Rice and Catherin Spring she married the celebrated poet and school friend of Lord Byron, Sir Aubrey de Vere in 1807 when she was only 18 years old, they had eight children. She died on the 11th February 1856.In her younger days she was one of Queen Victoria's Maids of Honour (1837 to 1841). Mary attended the Queen's Coronation on the 28th June 1838 and was appreciated very much by Prince Albert for their conversation in German. The Queen rather unkindly observed however that she was more clever than good looking.Edward Hodges Baily:Baily was born in Downend, Bristol and was considered the greatest exponent of 'ideal' sculpture in mid-nineteenth Century England. The son of a ship carver, Baily never travelled abroad or visited Rome but had a natural aptitude for modelling. He began his career in a merchant's counting house, but took lessons from a wax modeller, leaving the counting house after only two years to pursue the arts. A young surgeon named Leigh recognised his talent, lending him two of the artist John Flaxman's designs and commissioning Baily to make models for them. Leigh was so impressed by these that he showed then to Flaxman. Baily soon joined Flaxman's studio and remained there for seven years and reportedly became Flaxman's favourite assistant. Flaxman provided designs to Rundell & Bridge and through him Baily began to work for the company in 1815, transporting Flaxman's designs into models. Baily stayed with Rundell & Bridge as a designer and modeller for nearly twenty years, until 1833 when he joined the rival firm Hunt & Roskill. It was during this period that the sculptor made the acquaintance of Joseph Neeld. In 1808 Baily joined the Royal Academy School and in 1811 he won a gold medal and a prize of 50 guineas for his Hercules Rescuing Alcestis from Orcas. Baily's models for silverware and his large-scale sculptures were closely related with perhaps his most famous sculpture, Eve at the Fountain, originally conceived as a handle for a soup-tureen. A marble version of this was also displayed at Grittleton. Although Baily's sculptural practice included commissions for funerary monuments and portrait busts this was not where his heart lay.His rival Francis Chantrey far outstripped him in these lucrative genres and Baily's pursuit of 'ideal' sculpture and his somewhat extravagant lifestyle led the sculptor into financial ruin. He was declared bankrupt in 1831 and again in 1838, when he was imprisoned. His creditors forced him to put up some of his 'idea' sculptures for sale by lottery. Joseph Neeld came to his rescue and purchased one of them, Maternal Affection (1837) for Grittleton. This work is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The relationship between artist and patron turned Baily's fortunes around and enabled the sculptor to create some of his most important and critically recognised works, culminating in one of the most iconic sculptures in London, the figure of Nelson on top of the famous column in Trafalgar Square, completed in 1843.
