There is small area of peeling to the mesh over one arm of the sofa. The upholstery is fragile and has splits which can be seen through the webbing - this is most notable to the seat of the sofa, one armchair with more cracks and openings than the other. He joined the staff of Punch in 1864, and became renowned for his cartoons satirising Victorian society. The Bath Chair and Bath chair-men, which are featured in the illustration presented here, make several appearances in his cartoons. Du Maurier was the grandfather of novelist Daphne du Maurier.
